New Releases on Netflix This Week & Top 10 Movies & Series: October 4, 2025

In one of the busiest weeks of the year for Netflix, we saw a total of 112 new movies and series touch down in the United States over the past seven days so it’s time to take stock and look back at the full list of new releases (including all the October 1st additions) plus take a look at what’s been picking up the most points in the daily US Netflix top 10s. 

While this week has certainly been busy, there’s still a lot to look forward to throughout the remainder of October, as we continue to chart our big list of what’s to come. Some new titles were announced for the lineup yesterday, including the SVOD debut of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and no doubt plenty more to come. What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend

Monster: The Ed Gein Story (Limited Series)

There has been a lot of talk about Monster since DAHMER first premiered a few years ago, and to this day, it remains on Netflix’s list of most-watched titles of all time. Not all of that talk is good, as the series continues to document and dramatize some of the most tragic and horrific events in human history, but they’re back with a very different type of series tracking the horrors of Ed Gein in the 1950s. 

In our slightly delayed review, published this morning (as not all press outlets were given advanced screeners), we noted that there’s a lot to love about the new season, but also plenty of head-scratchers. Giving it three stars, we ultimately concluded, “Despite its promising start and standout performances, Monster: The Ed Gein Story ultimately falls victim to its own ambition. Charlie Hunnam is magnetic, and the atmosphere is haunting; however, the series often trades substance for style.”

The big new Netflix Original movie of the week originates from the United Kingdom and serves as an adaptation of the novella Shy by Max Porter, who brings it to the screen with the help of Tim Mielants. Cillian Murphy, best known for his iconic roles in Peaky Blinders and Christopher Nolan’s most prized work, plays a head teacher facing challenges from all directions, as his school is currently in special measures and on the brink of closure.

We also did manage to review this for the time of release and were blown away by Cillian Murphy (perhaps to 0 surprise given he’s such an acting legend at this point) with a particular emphasis on his fantastic portrayal of mental health. Our own Andrew Morgan wrote, “90 minutes of chaos & compassion that gives an intensely intimate look at severe mental health and people willing to put themselves on the line to help them. Murphy leads an impressive cast in a carefully crafted examination of the constant battles against trauma, illness, & institutional challenges.”

Angel Has Fallen (2019)

Finally, if you’re looking for some action this weekend, we know anytime a Gerard Butler movie drops on Netflix US, it usually tops the most-watched list the following week, and we suspect Angel has Fallen, which returns to Netflix after being away for five years, appeared on Netflix today. The synopsis reads, “Secret Service agent Mike Banning is caught in the crossfire when he’s framed for a deadly attack on the president and forced to run for his life.”
