As YA Netflix hit Finding Her Edge enters production, we recently caught up with showrunner Jeff Norton for an update on the new season. Prepare for more ice-skating drama, more romances, and a story that stretches beyond what we see in the original novel.
Between Geek Girl, Finding Her Edge, and his latest project Crew Girl, it increasingly feels like Jeff Norton is building his own ‘YA Drama Universe’ — and to an extent, he is doing just that. He’s riding the momentum of Finding Her Edge after its hugely popular debut on Netflix in February 2026. The mammoth audience for sporty teenage coming-of-age romances is waiting in the wings for more, and not only is he ready to oblige, but he’s here for the long haul.
Norton has been a busy man so far in 2026; of course, there’s the aforementioned Finding Her Edge. In addition to that, Netflix themselves also approached him with an idea for a rowing drama, specifically about a young, outspoken girl who coxswains a crew of 8 competitive teenage boys. That idea gestated, and he became the executive producer on Crew Girl, a series from showrunner Vivian Lin. Crew Girl debuts on Netflix on September 10th.
Right now, Norton is focused on Finding Her Edge Season 2. The scripts are written; the cast has assembled once more, and Netflix officially announced that production was underway on Wednesday, September 2nd. When we jumped on a call with Norton, he was in the midst of filming Finding Her Edge Season 2, carving out a little time to chat from the passenger seat of a car, travelling between sets. “We’ve been in a rink, and so very cold the last few days,” he says. “Now it’s sunny and humid and beautiful, and we’ll be outside for the next eight, nine hours, and hoping for no rain.”
The series was renewed for another season at Netflix shortly after its premiere back in February 2026, where it leaped into Netflix’s Top 10 rankings and went viral across social media. Being back on set with the cast is a warm homecoming for all involved. “It’s great!” Norton exclaims. “It’s almost like we’ve never left.”
“The cast are wonderful, and I think they’ve really sparked to the scripts this season. They have all eight scripts, so they’ve got full visibility of the storyline, and they’re just so excited to dig in,” he added.
After Season 1 adapted the entirety of the best-selling novel by Jennifer Iacopelli, the next batch of episodes present opportunities for Norton to take the story in new original directions. For instance, that means stepping aside from the complicated love triangle of Season 1 to explore the romances of different characters.
In Season 2, the Russo sisters trade their family rink for the pressure of Voltage Academy, where every skate could make or break their National Team ambitions. There, we meet new personalities, and discover new romances. “I’ve given a number of the other characters outside the three main characters [Adriana, Brayden, and Freddie] their own romantic story arcs,” he teases, “and I think the cast are really relishing that.”
For this upcoming season, the themes are clear, and Norton has a distinct vision of what he is trying to achieve. “I think for me, the metaphor I’ve been trying to pursue is, ‘off to college’,” he explains. “And what I mean by that is that the core group of Russo skaters have now moved into the Voltage Training Academy, which is a completely different type of training facility, and it’s the metaphor of leaving home and going to college for the first time. They’re on their own, they’re living in dorms, it’s just a different feel. I’m trying to capture that sense of independence that comes with moving away from home for the first time.”
Netflix has not set a release window for Finding Her Edge Season 2 yet, but we can be pretty certain that it’ll arrive on our screens in 2027. Watch this space.
Jeff Norton is building a strong roster of YA Dramas — What’s in store for the future?
Between his work on Finding Her Edge, Crew Girl, and Geek Girl, we’re seeing Norton build out a distinctive branch of YA dramas, something we jokingly named the ‘Jeff Norton Cinematic Universe’ — and Norton himself is privy to the idea. “There’s something very real about the authentic experience of being a teenager and trying to find your place in the world that carries on through your 20s, 30s, and onwards,” he says. ”And so that’s the thing that I’m attracted to with these types of shows. One of my cast members called it the ‘Jeff Norton Cinematic Universe,’ and I think that’s probably the thing that ties all the shows together — capturing the big feeling of what it means to figure out who you are.”
Not only does Finding Her Edge have scope to develop into a long-running series, but he hopes that all of his shows have the opportunity to develop longer storylines. “I would love to do further seasons of all of these shows,” he says. “Obviously, with Finding Her Edge, we’ve just started production. And if Crew Girl resonates with the audience in a way that I hope it will, I think we’ll be able to go again.”
So far, the sporting focus has been on ice skating and rowing — two sports that have teenagers particularly highly-strung. Looking ahead, his outlook is less on finding new sports to throw teens into, but exploring more coming-of-age storylines, which is where the magic of the genre truly lies. “I think for me, it’s less about the sports, per se, and it’s more about the emotionality of coming-of-age. That’s the thing I really love trying to capture in all of my young adult shows — and these three have each got an element of it — there’s something very relatable because everybody at every age or stage is still figuring out who they are. I don’t know a single adult that feels like they’re fully formed. They’re still trying new things.”
