Another of Netflix’s earliest Netflix Originals is biting the dust soon. As we’ve previously covered and now confirmed, Between, the Canadian sci-fi thriller starring Jennette McCurdy, is scheduled to depart Netflix globally on July 1st, 2026.

If you’ve been a Netflix subscriber for the better part of a decade, you might remember Between as one of the streamer’s earliest experiments. Created by Michael McGowan, the series premiered in May 2015 and followed the small town of Pretty Lake, which is suddenly quarantined after a mysterious disease wipes out everybody over the age of 21. Left to fend for themselves, the surviving millennials and teenagers must navigate the quarantine zone, government conspiracies, and each other.

The series starred iCarly alum Jennette McCurdy in the lead role of Wiley Day, a pregnant teenager and a minister’s daughter, alongside Jesse Carere, Ryan Allen, and Justin Kelly.

Aside from its intriguing YA premise, Between holds a very unique place in Netflix history. Because it was a co-production with the Canadian network Citytv, Netflix didn’t drop the entire first season all at once. Instead, as we covered at the time, Netflix released new episodes weekly—a massive anomaly for the streamer back in 2015 when the “binge model” was essentially their entire brand identity.

Netflix and Citytv eventually pivoted back to a traditional binge release for Season 2 in July 2016, dropping all six episodes simultaneously.

And then… nothing. Despite a cliffhanger ending that clearly set up a third season, the show fell into the dreaded “ghost cancellation” void. We tracked the MIA status of Season 3 for years, but it eventually became clear that the quarantine in Pretty Lake was permanent. There was fan appetite for it (as evidenced by our article having nearly 2,000 comments!), but for a number of reasons, it wasn’t renewed, but never publicly canceled either. It certainly didn’t help that the show’s main star, McCurdy, had quit acting permanently but remains in the public eye with her writing

Now, ten years after that final season debuted, the series is leaving the platform entirely.

When is Between leaving Netflix?

Both seasons of Between (totaling 12 episodes) are currently scheduled to depart Netflix globally on July 1st, 2026. Because Netflix removals take place at midnight Pacific Time on the stated date, your absolute last full day to binge the series will be June 30th, 2026. The notice is now appearing on the page.

Why is a “Netflix Original” leaving?

As we frequently point out, the “Netflix Original” label is often applied to co-productions or shows where Netflix simply holds exclusive international distribution rights.

Between was produced by Don Carmody Television, Mulmur Feed Co., and Elevation Pictures in association with Citytv and Netflix. Netflix’s involvement gave them exclusive streaming rights outside of Canada (and eventually streaming rights within Canada, too).

Typically, these co-production licensing agreements last for ten years following the release of the final season. Since Season 2 dropped on July 1st, 2016, the contract’s 10-year clock has officially run out.

Where will Between stream next?

At this time, no new streaming home has been announced. However, given that it is a Canadian production, the rights will likely revert fully to the show’s original production companies and Rogers Media (the parent company of Citytv).

Like many defunct teen shows, there is a strong possibility it will eventually pop up on free, ad-supported streaming platforms (FAST) like Tubi, Pluto TV, or The Roku Channel. But if you want to watch it ad-free on Netflix, or revisit Jennette McCurdy’s final major acting role before she retired from the screen to write her bestselling memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, you have a few weeks left to do so.
