The second season of the hit anime series, Rurouni Kenshin, will touch down on Netflix in multiple regions in October 2025.
For those unfamiliar, the series is set in the Meiji era of Japan, with the story focusing on a wandering swordsman, Kenshin Himura, who arrives in Tokyo in 1878.
As you may recall, Netflix picked up the show in multiple regions, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Latin America, and South Africa, in February of this year. That pick-up was a big surprise at the time, given that it had been primarily exclusive to Crunchyroll up until that point. The streamer carries both the original audio and dubs for English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
That said, Netflix has a strong attachment to the franchise, as they carry all the live-action movies from 2012, including the main trilogy released in the early 2020s, and more recently, hold the exclusive rights to the two 2021 live-action movies labeled as Netflix Originals.
Of course, Netflix in Asian territories, which are already streaming season 2, have been streaming the show for a number of years, with Japan simulcasting it and countries like South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore picking it up soon after.
Following its release in those new territories in 2025, the show picked up modest viewership with 16.9M hours watched equating to around 1.8M views.
The arrival on Netflix comes around a year after its initial release in late 2024, with Crunchyroll having first-run rights in the US to the show. All episodes will land in multiple countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, beginning on October 4th, 2025.
What can you expect from season 2? Kenshin heads to Kyoto alone, rejecting Saitō’s alliance to avoid further casualties. Sanosuke tries to follow but is stopped and defeated by Saitō, who ultimately acknowledges his resolve and lets him go. In Tokyo, Megumi consoles Kaoru, urging her to uphold the dojo and giving her medicine for Kenshin. Yahiko then convinces Kaoru to pursue Kenshin, reminding her that she is the one person who can bring him back.
Better news still is that a third season is in the works. Confirmed in March 2025 at AnimeJapan, although other details about the release schedule remain under wraps.
