‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’: Everything We Know About The Netflix Movie So Far

Brad Pitt is suiting up and returning to his iconic role of Cliff Booth in a new Netflix Original movie that’s easily one of the streamer’s most anticipated in its history. David Fincher is on board to direct based on a script by Quentin Tarantino. Here’s everything we know so far about The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

It’s worth noting at this point in the proceedings that, as of June 2025, Netflix has yet to comment or confirm the new movie officially. We suspect it will change shortly before filming begins. 

We should also note that there are two conflicting names for the movie: The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth and The Adventures of Cliff Booth. Given most production listings now list the latter rather than the former, we’ll use that henceforth. 

How The Adventures of Cliff Booth Came To Be And Development History

Rumors had been circulating in early 2025 about a new David Fincher and Brad Pitt project, alongside a slew of news about what would be next for David Fincher after The Killer. As we first reported, Fincher was attached to a movie project called Bitterroot in late 2024, in addition to Fincher being long attached to work on a new US spin-off of Squid Game (something we should hear more about imminently).

Then, on April 1st (yes, really), and during CinemaCon, The Playlist lifted the lid on a sequel/follow-up to the 2019 movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Their reporting that the script for this follow-up had evolved from The Movie Critic, the title that was meant to be Tarantino’s tenth and final film at one stage. 

Reporting has subsequently revealed that Brad Pitt convinced Tarantino to show the script to Fincher, who works with Netflix under an overall deal, and the rest is history, with the project being fast-tracked and the rest is history. 

This marks the first film to be written by Quentin Tarantino but not directed by him since From Dusk Till Dawn back in 1996, and also his first major project with Netflix, although the streamer is/was (depending on where you live) the home to a serialized version of his movie The Hateful Eight in addition to an extended cut. Netflix also had the SVOD debut for Tarantino’s western documentary Django & Django: Sergio Corbucci Unchained added in 2021. 

Some reports suggest that Netflix paid $20 million for the script of The Adventures of Cliff Booth. 

David Heyman, Shannon McIntosh, and Stacey Sher are producing with Laray Mayfield serving as casting director. Erik Messerschmidt, a longtime collaborator with David Fincher, is on board to serve as director of photography. 

What’s The Adventures of Cliff Booth about?

No official plot has been revealed yet, although we know that Pitt’s Cliff Booth will be central to the story and will portray a Hollywood fixer, someone who knows how to dispose of bodies and, equally important, where they are buried. Booth in the first movie was a stuntman for Rick Dalton in addition to being Dalton’s fixer of problems. 

At the end of June, Brad Pitt, while on the promotional tour for F1: The Movie, said the upcoming project would be an “episode” as opposed to a direct sequel. “This is something Quentin Tarantino wrote,” Pitt said, “It’s an episode, not really a sequel, of the character from ‘Once Upon A Time’. He didn’t want to direct it at this point, so our friend David Fincher stepped in.”

Sean Fennessey, host of The Big Picture podcast (via World of Reel), revealed that the movie takes place in 1977, roughly eight years after the events of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. 

Who is in the cast for The Adventures of Cliff Booth?

Castings have come in multiple waves thus far and in dribs and drabs, so let’s run through them:

Elizabeth Debicki was the first name attached to the project beyond Pitt, and we obtained the scoop (later confirmed by THR). Her role is for Roberta, the manager of a mud wrestling bar. Debicki is best known for her recent Emmy-winning role on Netflix’s flagship series The Crown. 

Alongside confirmation of Debicki joining the cast, it was reported by THR that Scott Caan. He’s best known for his roles in the Ocean’s movies, as well as his more recent appearances on TV, including his long-standing position on Hawaii Five-0. His role on The Adventures of Cliff Booth is currently unknown. 

Aldis Hodge was once in talks for the role of Harrell, a former NFL player turned actor, although Deadline reported after our scoop that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had been cast in a role with a very similar character description. They describe the role as follows: “Sources say the character would be in the vein of Jim Brown, who famously ended his Hall of Fame football career early to focus on acting, starring in such hits as The Dirty Dozen.”

Carla Gugino is the most recent name attached to the project (via Deadline) in an unknown role. She’s perhaps best known in the Netflix universe for working on various projects with Mike Flanagan, such as Gerald’s Game and The Fall of the House of Usher. 

As filming kicked off, Corey Fogelmanis (Ma), Karren Karagulian (Anora), and JB Tadena (Kung Fu) were announced to be attached.

Will Leonardo DiCaprio be back? No official word has been released yet on whether he’s signed on, but there is some reporting that suggests it’s undoubtedly part of the plan to bring him back in some form or another. On April 1st, The Insneider reported that he was in negotiations to return for the project, and later followed up, stating that he’d be in a cameo role and had been offered millions to reprise his role as Rick Dalton. The original report from The Playlist also suggested that Margot Robbie would return if needed.

When will production begin on The Adventures of Cliff Booth?

Filming was previously scheduled to begin on July 16; however, after a recent update, we’ve learned that filming is now set to start on July 28, 2025. A 6-month shoot is still the plan, and the end date for filming is still listed as January 16, 2026.

One of the main codenames for the movie is UFP25 (which we believe stands for Untitled Fincher Project). That same project name was registered on the Copyright Office in early July 2025 and is being helmed by Upcoming Productions, Inc. That production company aligns with the recently approved California Tax Credit for an Untitled Netflix Project. There, the movie was approved for $105,927,000 in qualified expenditures, with 110 filming days in California, 128 cast hired, 425 crew hired, and 3960 background players in days worked. 

Production will take place in Los Angeles, much like the original movie. On July 29th, we got our very first look at Brad Pitt on the set of the movie, sporting his signature yellow button shirt and later a jacket. Shortly afterwards, Brad Pitt is seen getting ready for his second night of filming, signaling to other actors with a flashlight. Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian are also spotted on set in Los Angeles with David Fincher in the background.
