Pictures: BackGrid
It’s now been well over a month since The Adventures of Cliff Booth began filming for Netflix. The sequel/follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 Once Upon A Time in Hollywood will continue to be in production through the remainder of the year, but we’re slowly building a picture of what we can expect thanks to numerous interviews, behind-the-scenes snaps, and more. Here’s some more info and first looks from Los Angeles.
In case you’ve been out of the loop, The Adventures of Cliff Booth is the new film in the universe of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. It’s a sequel-ish continuation set in 1977, about eight years after the events of the 2019 film. Quentin Tarantino wrote the script, but he isn’t directing this time; instead, David Fincher is at the helm.
New First Looks Behind The Scenes
We’ve been collecting some behind-the-scenes snaps courtesy of BackGrid, who have been tracking the production night and day throughout the City of Angels. The snaps below range from late August through to just this week. Snaps were taken around Hollywood and Malibu.
In these new driving scenes, Brad Pitt’s character can be seen wearing a T-shirt with an STP logo, which is a motor oil company. He’s driving an iconic classic Pontiac Lemans. You’ll also notice he’s carrying a take-out fast food bag that’s widely believed to be from Big Kahuna’s, a fictional burger chain that featured in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and many other movies by the director. Additional snaps taken found on social media show advertisements and even a restaurant constructed.

In late August, Elizabeth Debicki, who we first confirmed would be starring in the movie, could be shooting alongside Pitt in an all-white outfit. Our understanding is that Debicki is playing Roberta, the manager of a mud wrestling bar.

Casting Updates on The Adventures of Cliff Booth
Barry Livingston, best known for roles on titles like Notorious Nick, Bosch, Invisible Mom, and My Three Sons, has been confirmed to be starring. The actor is also a Fincher regular, having appeared in Zodiac and The Social Network (h/t The Fincher Analyst). According to Rewind Magazine, which interviewed him on September 5th, the actor confirmed he’ll be playing a “disco kingpin”.
We should also note that Holt McCallany has ruled himself out of appearing in the movie, despite being listed as appearing in a Variety article and on IMDb. He told the New York Post in late August, “Everybody thinks that I’m in the sequel to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ because I was listed in Variety as being part of the cast, but I’m not actually in that one.”
As a reminder, the rest of the confirmed cast includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and JB Tadena, with Timothy Olyphant also confirming recently that he’s set to reprise his role as James Stacy.
