Just when you thought the Big Blue Bug of Justice couldn’t get any more screen time this summer, we have a big update. Following the news that Patrick Warburton’s 2001 cult classic The Tick is hitting Netflix in select regions, we’ve now learned that the 2016 Prime Video reboot is also making the jump!
Created by Ben Edlund, The Tick has been a Prime Video Original since its initial pilot premiered in 2016, with an additional half-season dropping a year later, and an additional six episodes that make up the season dropping in 2018. It was given a full 10-episode renewal, although that would be the end, given it was promptly canceled in 2019.
Despite being a Prime Video Original, like the 2001 Fox series, the 2016 reboot is actually distributed by Sony Pictures Television. The exclusivity rights have likely come up, allowing Sony Pictures Television to monetize the show elsewhere, with Netflix swooping in and securing the rights to this brilliant modern take on the character.
The 2016 reboot, which stars Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) in the titular blue suit alongside Griffin Newman as Arthur, ran for two critically acclaimed seasons. When it arrives on Netflix, fans will be able to binge all 22 episodes of the superhero satire.
Unlike the 2001 series, which joins Netflix on July 8th, the reboot will join Netflix nearly a week later in select territories on July 15th.
Where is the 2016 reboot of The Tick streaming on Netflix?
Just like the 2001 series, streaming rights are completely region-dependent. Here is the breakdown of where the Peter Serafinowicz reboot is heading:
- Latin America: Countries including Brazil, Argentina, and others across the region will be receiving the reboot.
- Europe: Both the United Kingdom and Germany are confirmed to receive the reboot. However, if you are in France, The Netherlands, or Italy, we don’t yet have confirmation given the series is not currently showing up for those territories—this could be due to prior, existing licensing agreements, or we may just need to wait a bit longer for the title to populate on their respective Netflix hubs. They are all getting the 2001 series, however.
- Australia: Aussies are getting the ultimate double feature, as Netflix Australia is confirmed to be getting both the 2001 Patrick Warburton series and the 2016 reboot.
How long Netflix will stream the series is unclear. Most licenses as of late have been anywhere between 6 months to 2 years.
What about the United States and Canada?
Unfortunately, we have some bad news for North American subscribers. The United States and Canada are currently the two biggest notable absences from both licensing deals. As of right now, neither the 2001 original series nor the 2016 reboot is slated to hit Netflix in the US or Canada. For now, domestic fans will have to stick to Prime Video to watch the 2016 iteration, while hoping Netflix manages to secure the US/Canadian rights to both shows in the future.
