Wednesday season 2 had a significant move from season 1 to season 2 in its filming location. While season 1 was filmed primarily in Romania across numerous locations throughout the country, that wouldn’t be the case with season 2, which moved entirely to Ireland. Season 1 was shot in iconic locations such as the Cantacuzino Castle and the Bucharest Botanical Garden, in addition to locations in Bucharest and Bușteni, so how does season 2 compare?

As a reminder, filming on season 2 kicked off in May 2024 and was completed by early December 2024. The budget for Wednesday season 2 isn’t a known fact, but some indicate that the series could cost around the $50 million mark for its eight new episodes. According to some sites, the show has become the “largest production” ever to shoot in Ireland.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-showrunners, told Ireland.com that filming in the country was “truly magical,” adding, “It adds a sense of timeless beauty, wonder, and epic spectacle to the world of Wednesday.”

Speaking about her time filming in Ireland, Jenna Ortega said, “I’d never been to Ireland, and it was wonderful. The crew was so hardworking, so sweet. Everybody here really felt like a family and it’s wonderful that they’ve all shot together so much. My favorite thing was just how kind the people are, but also the countryside was really nice. I did my best to see as much of the island as I could while I was there. I went north, south, east, west, I went all over. I’m pretty proud of myself.”

Luis Guzman also echoed Ortega’s sentiments, saying, “I loved shooting in Ireland. The people are wonderful. I enjoyed our drivers, because you really had the opportunity to listen to that beautiful Irish accent. There are great places to eat and the landscape is sensational. You see some of the castles — on your drives, you pass these places and it’s like everybody has a stone wall, and it’s just so beautiful, so nostalgic. There’s a real history there, and I love that. The one thing I didn’t do is jump into the ocean.”

Locations Used In Filming Wednesday Season 2

Thanks to eyewitnesses, government websites, and some helpful information from Netflix, here’s a look at the locations used for Wednesday S2, which involved filming in Counties Wicklow, Dublin, Kilternan, Clonliffe, Roundwood, and Offaly.

Ashford Studios, County Wicklow

Ashford Studios served as the production’s main base, housing most of the interior sets for Wednesday Season 2. This is the same location Netflix used relatively recently with Vikings: Valhalla, another show produced by MGM Television.

This is where Nevermore Academy’s halls, classrooms, and other key indoor spaces were built and filmed. The studio’s large sound stages allowed for the intricate gothic design work that defines the show’s atmosphere. The studio offers various spaces spanning up to 30,000 square feet—a series of spaces currently under construction will span an additional 170,000 square feet.

Filming also took place on the exterior of the studios, with a theme park set, Pilgrim World, being spotted from nearby public roads.

Charleville Castle, County Offaly

Charleville Castle was a standout location, doubling as the exterior of Nevermore Academy, and served as the corridors, according to Netflix.

The Gothic Revival-style castle fits perfectly into Wednesday’s eerie and mysterious world. The castle’s historic corridors and stone facades added an authentic grandeur that would be difficult to replicate on a set. Filming here also brought attention to one of Ireland’s most architecturally significant heritage sites, in Tullamore’s woodlands.

Powerscourt Estate & Roundwood, County Wicklow

Powerscourt Estate, with its gardens and graveyard-like corners, provided a natural backdrop for some of the show’s most atmospheric outdoor scenes. There’s a viral TikTok video of Jenna Ortega walking on the grounds. One Redditor also posted in October 2024 from the graveyards, which still had some of the brilliant props laid out. The iconic location has already been the home to the likes of 1981’s Excalibur, The Count of Monte Cristo, and the TV series Vikings throughout the 2010s.

Powerscourt Waterfall is also the setting for some of season 2. It serves as Ireland’s second-highest waterfall at 121 meters high, and is located in Glensoulan on the River Dargle near Enniskerry, County Wicklow. You can see a stunning photo of it below:

Roundwood, located nearby, was also reportedly used for additional rural exteriors, capturing the rolling hills and secluded roads that add to the series’ isolated feel.

Dublin City & Surrounding Areas

Several Dublin locations served as both real and fictional settings. Trinity College Dublin’s modern business school was transformed into an airport terminal designed to look like New Jersey airport (seen in the teaser trailer). Clonliffe, a district in Dublin City, hosted select scenes.

Dean’s Grange Cemetery supplied a hauntingly real burial ground for key sequences. Kilternan, on the border of Dublin and Wicklow, provided transitional and rural-urban fringe shots. Additional reports suggest that Kilternan Ski School was also used for some shots.

Newcastle Village, County Wicklow

Newcastle was used for small-town exterior shots, serving as the real-life location of the Kansas City Scalper’s (played by Haley Joel Osment) home in August 2024. According to Condé Nast Traveler, the production dressed the streets to transform them into a “shabby Kansas neighbourhood”, complete with distressed paint and front garden dressing to portray a scaled-down, down-at-heel American street scene.
