Happy Labor Day Weekend to all those in the United States, and if you’re looking to sit down and watch something new on Netflix, the streamer added 25 new movies and series over the past seven days, and we’re here to recap them all.

Labor Day itself will bring with it a bunch of titles you won’t find listed below. We’ll be covering the full list on Monday, but there’s plenty to be excited about, such as the complete series Orphan Black, as well as a variety of movies from different distributors, both new and old. You can find everything coming up on Netflix throughout September 2025 in our full preview for the month.

What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend

The Thursday Murder Club (2025)

Rating: PG-13
Language: English
Genre: Comedy, Crime, Mystery
Director: Chris Columbus
Cast: Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Jonathan Pryce
Writer: Katy Brand, Suzanne Heathcote, Richard Osman

Netflix’s big new movie release of the week (after a particularly quiet August it must be said), is The Thursday Murder Club which pulls in Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus and some British acting superstars and sees them bring to life the famous Richard Osman novel telling the story of a retirement home murder mystery club put to their paces when a real murder lands on their doorstep.

Reviews have been mixed to good on the film thus far, and it’s already topping the charts in most countries around the world. In our review, where we gave it a 2 1/2 star rating (average), we concluded:

“Despite notes and gripes about lacking punch or convenient plot devices (digging up a grave first instead of non-sacriligious ground?!) or whatever Ben Kingsley was trying to pull off or the fact that the group doesn’t really solve the murder first or the flashback that never came of Elizabeth & Penny’s relationship to establish any semblance of emotion in the finale, The Thursday Murder Club will still succeed. The leading actors don’t disappoint, the plot is easy to digest, the murders are either non-violent or off-screen, and the levity & charm is just enough to make a movie night after work enjoyable. Just keep those expectations as low as the amount of wine left in your glass after a long week.”

On Swift Horses (2024)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Romance
Director: Daniel Minahan
Cast: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter
Writer: Shannon Pufahl, Bryce Kass
Runtime: 119 min / 1h 59m

Arriving on Netflix in the first window with its addition last weekend, marking its SVOD debut, is the overlooked LGBTQ+ romance drama that released in theaters in late April. The plot revolves around Muriel and her husband, Lee, who start fresh in California after the Korean War, but their life unravels with the arrival of Lee’s charming, reckless brother, Julius. As a love triangle sparks, Julius vanishes in pursuit of a card cheat, while Muriel begins her own secret life, drawn into racehorse gambling and an unexpected romance.

It picked up mixed reviews from critics upon its initial release, but from quickly surfing through the new reviews popping up on socials this week, the heavyweight cast is more than enough for people to jump in.

Wind River (2017)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
Director: Taylor Sheridan
Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, Graham Greene
Writer: Taylor Sheridan
Runtime: 107 min / 1h 47m

One of the unexpected returns to the Netflix US library this week is Wind River, which was last seen in the catalog around a year ago. This particular movie came out just before Taylor Sheridan became the prolific TV writer known around the world through his shows like Yellowstone and Landman, but it’s got the essential DNA that makes those shows tick.

Led by spectacular performances from Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner, who have been on screen together through the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, the plot revolves around an FBI agent who teams with the town’s veteran game tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation.

Some Extra Labor Day Recommendations

  • Working: What We Do All Day – Barack Obama narrates this Netflix docuseries diving into how people in the US work, live, and feel about their jobs. Socio-economic layers peeled back—perfect for a reflective holiday.
  • The Six Triple Eight – A stirring war drama about the all‑Black, all‑female postal battalion in WWII. Though not new this weekend, its themes of service and recognition fit the Labor Day spirit well.
  • American Factory – Also from the Obamas’ production company, this powerful look at what happens when a shuttered GM plant in Ohio is reopened by a Chinese company. It examines cultural friction, labor tensions, and economic shifts with nuance and compassion. It’s produced by the Obamas’ Higher Ground and gives a lived, real‑time sense of workers navigating a globalized economy.
  • Workin’ Moms – Although Labor Day is a US thing, labor exists all around the globe, which is why we’re recommending this Canadian sitcom about mothers who have to re-enter the workplace shortly after maternity leave.
