Tyler Perry’s beloved comedy-drama franchise is officially getting a long-awaited “threequel.” Coming exclusively to Netflix later this year, Why Did I Get Married Again? reunites most of the original stars for another emotional and hilarious getaway—this time for a destination wedding. Here is an updated comprehensive breakdown of everything we know so far about Why Did I Get Married Again?, including the plot, the returning cast, new additions, production status, its official age rating, and new runtime.

As a reminder, the project was first unveiled back in October 2025, quite hastily, it must be said, given that cameras had already begun rolling and set photos began leaking from Lake Como, more on that in a bit.

We should mention how long fans have been begging for this sequel and how it almost didn’t happen. In December 2024, Tyler Perry appeared on The Sherri Show and shut down rumors of a third film. At the time, he admitted he wanted to do it, but cited that getting the ensemble’s busy schedules to align was a logistical nightmare. However, just seven months later in July 2025, Perry shocked fans by posting a photo of a “Table Draft” script on Instagram with the caption, “I’m just gonna sit this right here!”.

What is the plot of Why Did I Get Married Again?

While the 2007 original film adapted Perry’s popular stage play about four couples working on their marriages in a snowy Colorado cabin, and the 2010 sequel sent them to the Bahamas, the third installment revolves around the next generation.

According to Netflix’s official synopses:

“A group of couples reunite in celebration as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they learn quickly that as much as things change, they stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question: Why did they get married… again?”

The “destination wedding” setting guarantees that old relationship drama and new family dynamics will bubble to the surface.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club back on May 7th, Michael Jai White (Marcus) offered some insights into the new film’s dynamic. Confirming that BMF star Da’Vinchi will be playing his son, White praised the script for tackling themes he hasn’t seen explored on screen before—specifically the facade parents put up for their kids. “As parents, we like to be simple role models… and children don’t know all the messing up that we did before it,” he explained. White also commended Tyler Perry’s evolving directing style, noting that Perry used an innovative filming method that eliminated long waits for camera setups, allowing the cast to “stay in the moment” and preserve their emotional energy. Finally, White addressed the elephant in the room regarding Janet Jackson’s absence. While she won’t be in this installment, White promised that fans will “definitely get closure” on her character, Patricia. He teased that she isn’t “gone gone,” hinting that if schedules align for a potential fourth movie down the line, we might just see her again.

Who is in the cast? Returning Stars & New Faces

Fans will be thrilled to see most of their favorites returning for the reunion. The returning original cast members include:

  • Tyler Perry as Terry
  • Jill Scott as Sheila
  • Michael Jai White as Marcus
  • Tasha Smith as Angela
  • Richard T. Jones as Mike (Note: IMDb data lists his character as Gavin, but fans will remember Mike from the original films)
  • Sharon Leal as Dianne
  • Lamman Rucker as Troy

However, as we previously reported, there are three major omissions from the original Lionsgate movies: Janet Jackson (Patricia), Malik Yoba (Gavin), and Keesha Sharp (Pam) are not listed on the cast roster.

Interestingly, when Tyler Perry made that initial script announcement on Instagram in July 2025, he actually tagged Janet Jackson alongside the rest of the original cast. This set high expectations for her return, although, unless there’s a big surprise to come, there’s no expectation of her appearing, as evidenced by White’s comments above.

New Cast Additions:

To fill out the guest list and portray the grown-up children, a slate of new actors are joining the franchise, headlined by Taraji P. Henson. Henson is a Tyler Perry regular who recently starred in his smash-hit Netflix film Straw.

The new ensemble of stars includes:

  • Taraji P. Henson (Empire, Straw)
  • Da’Vinchi (BMF, The Way Back)
  • Laya DeLeon Hayes (The Equalizer)
  • Jaden Michael (Harlan Coben’s Shelter)
  • Sydney Winbush (Power Book II: Ghost)
  • Armani Greer (The Waterboyz)
  • Everett Osborne (Sweetwater)
  • Charles L. Smith II (9-1-1)
  • Derrick A. King (Run the World)

Who is behind the movie?

As with the previous installments and his other Netflix projects, Tyler Perry wears multiple hats. He serves as the film’s writer, director, and producer.

Additional behind-the-scenes crew members include:

  • Producers: Angi Bones and Tony Strickland
  • Cinematographer: Justyn Moro
  • Composer: Sharon Farber
  • Casting Director: Kim Coleman
  • Production Supervisors/Managers: Alice Chauvain, Carlos De La Torre, and Michele Priano

The film is produced by Tyler Perry Studios as part of Perry’s highly lucrative creative partnership with Netflix. Perry’s recent movies on the streamer have been major wins: Madea’s Destination Wedding spent four weeks on the Global Top 10 Movies list, and the Taraji P. Henson-led Straw spent five weeks on the Global Top 10 list, reaching #1 in 62 countries.

Where did filming take place and what is the production status?

Production for Why Did I Get Married Again? was an international affair spanning two major shoots.

Filming initially began with a major on-location shoot in Lombardy, Italy, specifically around the iconic Lake Como, running from late September through late October 2025.

The production then moved stateside, with principal photography officially kicking off its main leg at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on January 7, 2026.

As mentioned above, a few set pictures did get out via BackGrid, and we’ve got three of those showing Tyler Perry and some of the cast in action at the iconic Italian lake in the north of the country.

When will Why Did I Get Married Again? release on Netflix?

While Netflix hasn’t locked in an exact premiere date just yet, official PR confirms the film is “coming later this year” (2026). Given its completed status, fans can likely expect a late summer or fall 2026 release—which would perfectly coincide with the 19th anniversary of the original film’s October 2007 theatrical release.

Adding to this theory is the fact that the movie just got officially rated PG-13 for sexual material and strong language, which usually indicates the movie could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months away. The picture is also locked on Netflix’s end with the official runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes.

Let us know in the comments if you are looking forward to Tyler Perry’s return to the Why Did I Get Married universe, and keep this post bookmarked as we’ll update it the second Netflix drops first looks, the trailer, and release date.
