We finally know when The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey will be hitting our screens, with Netflix officially setting a global release date of December 10th for the highly anticipated limited series.

To tide us over until a trailer drops, Netflix also gave us our very first look at the new series—and the transformation of its two lead stars is pretty incredible.

In the brand-new first-look image (see above), Academy Award nominees Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen are seen portraying Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey. Dressed in somber mourning attire, the tense pair are depicted sitting shoulder-to-shoulder before a television camera crew. It’s a chilling recreation of the intense media scrutiny and the highly publicized, heavily dissected interviews the real-life couple navigated following the tragic events of Christmas 1996. The styling and makeup teams have clearly gone to great lengths to capture the late-’90s aesthetic, with McCarthy looking almost unrecognizable in the role of Patsy.

Netflix notably picked up the series back on July 1st, after it had previously been in development and planned at one stage for release on Paramount+, but Paramount ultimately decided not to move forward, though it was produced anyway. Netflix took the global rights.

If this case sounds familiar to your Netflix queues, it’s because this isn’t the streamer’s first time exploring the tragic unsolved murder. Back in 2017, Netflix released the acclaimed, albeit highly unconventional, original documentary Casting JonBenet. While that project took a meta, experimental approach by interviewing Colorado locals as they auditioned for roles in a fictional film about the case, this new series is a straight, prestige dramatization of the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the murder. They then followed that up in a 3-part docu-series in 2024 as part of their Cold Case brand

Produced by 101 Studios (the powerhouse behind Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown), the series is helmed by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Richard LaGravenese (Behind the Candelabra, A Family Affair). Anne Sewitsky (Presumed Innocent) is on board as director and executive producer, with Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach co-writing.
