German Netflix Original series Skylines has been canceled after a single season, meaning there will be no season 2 coming to Netflix anytime soon. Here’s all that we know about the cancelation.

News of Skylines cancelation was broken by the German news site Spiegel Online, reporting that “Netflix does not want a second season of Skylines.” Further evidence to confirm the news of cancelation came from Edin Hasnovic, one of the stars of Skyline, confirming the news in an Instagram post.

Why has Netflix canceled Skylines?

Netflix has yet to comment on why Skylines is being canceled.

This is a great disappointment to many subscribers, especially to the German paying customers, which have seen Skylines as being overwhelmingly positive.

The cancelation of Skylines is most likely due to the lawsuit against the Original. Skyline Records, the record label featured throughout the series, is also the name of a real-life record label that is also based out of Frankfurt.

What is the Lawsuit?

Jan Lehmann, the owner of Skyline Records, had accused Netflix of knowingly using the name of his record label after researching the music scene in Frankfurt. The German record label has been around since 2003, with its first record released in 2005.

Alongside the use of the record label’s name, Lehmann has also accused Netflix of hurting the image rights of his record label thanks to the use of drug trafficking and other various crimes seen throughout Skylines. Lehmann was seeking a restraining order against Netflix, which meant the series could be pulled from the streaming service if Lehmann won his case in court. A similar case was seen recently when Netflix was being “sued” over the Panama Paper scandal film The Laundromat. Ultimately, Netflix won, and The Laundromat was still released.

Despite the Frankfurt district court rejecting his injunction, due to “freedom of art”, Lehmann still intends to pursue the case.

Despite its popularity, Netflix may not want the cost and hassle of having to go to court over Skylines any longer.

What was the reaction online?

As we discussed above, lead actor Edin Hasnovic took to Instagram to express his disappointment. Fellow cast member, actress Peri Baumeister also took to social media to express her feelings about the cancelation.

Various media outlets have expressed their disappointment, along with many fans of the series:

Even those who hadn’t watched the series, still respected what it meant to others.

Will Skylines be revived?

At the time of writing its hard to say if Netflix would ever revive Skylines. Especially if Jan Lehmann intends to keep pursuing a legal case against the series.

Considering its popularity in Germany it wouldn’t be out of the question for a German network to purchase the series themselves.

Hopefully, for the fans, we can see Skylines return for a second season.
