Netflix has announced The Final Problem (El problema final as it’s known in Spain), a five-episode miniseries set to premiere in 2025, based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s bestselling novel. Filmed on location in the spring of 1959, the story unfolds on a remote Mallorcan islet where a violent storm strands thirteen unsuspecting guests and staff at a small seaside hotel.

The series is produced by Fernando Bovaira (Mientras dure la guerra, La Fortuna) for Mod Producciones, with Urko Errazquin (El campeón, La vida padre) serving as executive producer. Alberto Macías, Carlos Molinero, and Marisol Farré adapt the screenplay, while Félix Viscarret (Una vida no tan simple, Don’t Look into Their Eyes) directs.

Leading the ensemble cast is José Coronado (Entrevías, The Snow Girl, Living Without Permission) as Basil, with María Valverde (We Were Songs) bringing depth to Elisa Mander’s enigmatic presence. Martiño Rivas (Cable Girls) joins alongside Maribel Verdú (When Nobody Sees Us, Now and Then), Gonzalo de Castro (Politically Incorrect, Tenderness), Cristina Kovani (The Silence, Hunting: Guadiana), José Condessa (Cocoa, Rabo de Peixe), and Pepón Nieto (Smiley, The Never Seen), among others.

The plot of the period thriller revolves around English tourist Elisa Mander, who is found dead in what appears to be a suicide. Retired actor Basil, famous for playing Sherlock Holmes, finds himself pulled into a mystery far darker than it first seems. Stranded on a remote islet with no way on or off, Basil must navigate a web of secrets and lies, where every guest and staff member is a suspect.
