Yeon Sang-ho’s The Bequeathed won’t return for a second season on Netflix. Here’s why.
The Bequeathed is the third Netflix project for Train to Busan creator Yean Sang-ho and arguably the least successful of his originals. However, we are looking forward to his fourth project, Parasyte: The Grey, the Korean adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Japanese manga, and the return of Hellbound.

The Bequeathed Season 2 Netflix Renewal Status

In the build-up to the release of The Bequeathed, Netflix did not use any language suggesting that the series would be released as a limited series. Articles from trade sites such as Deadline and Variety also failed to report the K-drama as a limited series.
This suggests that this was either a massive oversight from Netflix or, to save themselves from a PR headache, they opted to list the K-drama as a limited series rather than announce its cancellation.
It would not be the first time Netflix has silently canceled a K-drama. Multiple K-dramas from 2022 and 2023 were silently canceled when Netflix changed them to a limited series.
How did The Bequeathed perform on Netflix?
The Bequeathed was only featured in the global top ten list for three weeks, during which time it amassed 6.8 million Views (Complete Viewing Equivalents) and 32.1 million hours viewed worldwide.
In the opening three days, compared to other K-dramas, The Bequeathed was significantly behind the rest of the pack.
Given the show’s performance, it was improbable that we would have seen a second season of The Bequeathed on Netflix.
Yeon Sang-Ho’s availability, or lack thereof, is another factor explaining why The Bequeathed wouldn’t have returned for a second season. He has been working on the upcoming release of Parasyte: The Grey and the second season of Hellbound. Outside of Netflix, he is attached to direct The Book of Revelation and is the screenwriter of The Cursed season 2.
