Following the massive success of The Monster of Florence (Il Mostro) last fall, Netflix has officially greenlit and started production on a new three-episode chapter of the gripping Italian true-crime series. Here’s everything we know so far about the anthology’s return.
As we reported back in August 2025 ahead of its October release, The Monster of Florence was initially billed as a four-part miniseries detailing the crimes of the most notorious serial killer in Italian history. However, Netflix and the creators are now expanding the narrative into a full-fledged anthology format.
The first chapter, which bowed at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival before dropping globally on Netflix, was an absolute smash hit. It quickly became the streamer’s most-watched non-English language series globally in its first week and took home the prestigious Nastro d’Argento Grandi Serie Award for Best Crime Series.
Now, the true-crime saga is back in production to explore a brand-new phase of the infamous investigation.
What to Expect from the New Chapter
If you recall from our coverage of the first season, the original episodes explored the initial line of inquiry known as the “Sardinian lead.” This upcoming three-episode installment will leap forward in time, pivoting to the highly controversial “Snack Buddies” lead and centering specifically on the figure of Pietro Pacciani.
Pacciani was the primary suspect in the brutal eight double murders that terrorized Italy between 1968 and 1985. Shrouded in mystery and heavily scrutinized by the press, he was at the center of a marathon trial filled with wild twists and turns.
Director and co-creator Stefano Sollima shared his vision for the expanded series, revealing that the story was always intended to be told in standalone arcs:
“We always imagined The Monster of Florence as an anthology series: standalone stories, each dedicated to one of the different suspects in the series of crimes that shocked Tuscany and Italy between the 1970s and 1980s… An investigation that lasted over 30 years.
After focusing on the Sardinian suspects, this time we leap forward in time to address perhaps the most well-known, controversial, and debated chapter of the entire incident: the story of Pietro Pacciani, convicted and later acquitted of the crimes, and his alleged accomplices, the infamous ‘Snack Buddies,’ as the press dubbed them. A court case that divided Italian public opinion for decades. Perhaps this is also why Pacciani’s case remains the most disturbing: guilt has never been proven, but also never completely ruled out.”

Who is behind the new episodes?
Stefano Sollima (Adagio, Without Remorse) returns to the director’s chair for the new installment. He co-created the series alongside Leonardo Fasoli.
The new chapter is produced by AlterEgo (founded by Sollima, Gina Gardini, and Ludovico Purgatori) and Wildside, a Fremantle company. Serving as producers on the new episodes are Sonia Rovai (CEO of Wildside), Gina Gardini, Stefano Sollima, and Lorenzo Mieli.
Wildside is a powerhouse in Italian cinema and television, having produced global hits like The Young Pope, My Brilliant Friend, and the recent box-office sensation There’s Still Tomorrow. AlterEgo previously collaborated with The Apartment to bring us the first chapter of this very series.
With production currently underway in Italy, we’re likely looking at a 2027 release date for the next chapter of The Monster of Florence, though Netflix has yet to confirm an exact premiere window, only stating that it is “coming soon.”
