Dark, Wednesday and Midnight Mass – Pictures: Netflix
Fancy watching a supernatural series on Netflix? In this list, we walk you through 10 of the finest original supernatural shows the streamer has to offer.
Some of Netflix’s most popular shows are supernatural-based. Look no further than global phenomenon series Stranger Things, and there’s plenty more where that comes from. Whether it’s hidden gems with a fantastical edge, or adaptations of classic paranormal tales — here’s 10 that you should definitely add to your watch lists!
Dead Boy Detectives
Two teen ghosts work alongside a clairvoyant to solve mysteries for their supernatural clientele -- until a powerful witch complicates their plans.
Netflix’s Sandman spinoff Dead Boy Detectives may have suffered a cruel fate due to premature cancellation, but the 8-episode series remains a fantastic standalone series. The supernatural series was well received by critics and casual viewers; look no further than our hugely positive review. Sadly, the lackluster numbers weren’t quite enough to merit another instalment.

That said, Dead Boy Detectives is a perfect binge for those of you out there who love silly, irreverent shows. It follows the deceased duo Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri), who decide against entering the afterlife and instead remain in the mortal world, investigating various supernatural mysteries.
While yes, it has been cancelled, we expect both of our main characters, Charles and Edwin, to appear in The Sandman season 2, coming in July.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Magic and mischief collide as half-human, half-witch Sabrina navigates between two worlds: mortal teen life and her family's legacy, the Church of Night.
Based on Archie Comics’ Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the Netflix series is a significantly darker reimagining of the original tale. It follows half-witch, half-mortal teen Sabrina Spellman, tasked with balancing her true nature with her normal day-to-day life. But her dual natures collide when her family is threatened.
Chock full of occult magic, this 4-season series will fulfil your need for a supernatural series with ease!
Locke & Key
After their dad's murder, three siblings move with their mom to his ancestral estate, where they discover magical keys that unlock powers -- and secrets.
Based on the beloved comic by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son), Locke & Key combines all the creepiness of King’s work, with Stranger Things spin mixed in for good measure.
Locke & Key is a wild ride. The series centres around a group of kids after they move into the mysterious Keyhouse — a home that holds many mysteries, including a bunch of keys that unlock all sorts of strange, supernatural things. The keys can make you become a ghost, teleport you anywhere, open up people’s brains, perform time travel, and more.
While Locke & Key doesn’t lean too much into horror territory, it’s totally family friendly, it has still got a spookiness about it. There’s ghosts, and naturally, a demonic villain out to get our protagonists. Locke & Key is a completed 3-season series, meaning no worrying about whether it’ll get renewed or not.
Haunted
Real people sit down with friends and family to share terrifying true stories from their past, re-created through chilling re-enactments.
From fiction to reality: Haunted is one of the most unique shows on Netflix. The series is told in a documentary style, where individuals share their supernatural encounters and experiences, surrounded by friends and family. The stories are told through chilling re-enactments. Episodes are short and sweet, ranging from 20-30 minutes per episode.
Some highlights from the series include Cult of Torture, where a man shares his disturbing experience with a religious conversion therapy cult. There’s also Ward of Evil, which follows a lady who faces a peculiar force while working as a nurse with dementia patients.
The Fall of the House of Usher
To secure their fortune -- and future -- two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one.
Mike Flanagan’s 8-episode limited series The Fall of the House of Usher is the ultimate gothic horror. Based on the works of legendary horror writer Edgar Allan Poe, the series is perfect for anyone looking to indulge in a chilling, highly supernatural, and unique whodunnit story.
The series follows the couple Roderick and Madeline Usher, who built their business, Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, into a superpower of wealth. However, when heirs to the Usher dynasty begin to mysteriously die, old secrets and supernatural entities arise.
This isn’t the only project by Flanagan on this list; his supernatural offerings are some of the best you’ll find on Netflix.
Dark
A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers as they unearth a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations.
Dark is right up there with my favorite Netflix series of all time. It could be considered more sci-fi and thriller than inherently supernatural, but it still holds more than enough spooky elements to be put in the latter category. Look no further than its gloomy, supernatural atmosphere, to the myth woven into the plot, and its mystical story.
Dark sets the scene in the quaint German town of Winden, where the mysterious disappearance of a boy begins to unravel a time-travel conspiracy. The show itself has a non-linear timeline, intricately weaving together past, present, and future — there’s paradoxes aplenty!
Prepare for a mind-melting show like no other.
The Haunting of Hill House
Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.
If you’re seeking a paranormal series on Netflix, it doesn’t get much better than this. The 10-episode series is one of the best-rated horror shows on Netflix, currently at an impressive 8.5/10 on IMDb.
The series—which jumps from the past to the present—follows the fractured Crain family, haunted by fragmented memories of their old house and the harrowing events that drove them away.
If you still can’t get enough of Flanagan’s projects after The Fall of the House of Usher and The Hunting of Hill House, he has several other horror projects on the streamer. You can also check out The Haunting of Bly Manor, an anthology sequel series that is equally fantastic.
Midnight Mass
The arrival of a charismatic young priest brings glorious miracles, ominous mysteries and renewed religious fervor to a dying town desperate to believe.
Of all the Mike Flanagan shows on Netflix, Midnight Mass sticks with me the most. A religious horror not entirely unlike The Wicker Man, the series takes place on a remote island. A charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater) arrives to revitalise the town’s faith. However, his arrival brings about certain strange, bizarre, and unsettling miracles.
Midnight Mass is relatively short, at just seven episodes, but it leaves a lasting impact. But be warned: It’s not for the faint of heart. Truthfully, the supernatural elements don’t kick in until the second half but once they do, they’re absolutely additive, as with any Flanagan project.
Wednesday
Woe to all seeking cheer — for at Nevermore, Yuletide flames cast shadows, the decor whispers doom and a hand tends the hearth.
Ghosts, dark rituals, werewolves, sirens and so much more — it doesn’t get much more supernatural than that. Starring Jenna Ortega as the iconic Wednesday Addams, Wednesday is one of the most popular shows on the streamer. In the series, Wednesday attends the gothic, creepy Nevermore Academy, where she studies to master her psychic powers alongside other ‘Outcasts’ with powers.
Wednesday has garnered a hugely devoted fanbase since airing in 2022. Its much-anticipated second season premieres August 6.
Stranger Things

As Vecna prepares to destroy the world as we know it, the party must put everything on the line to defeat him once and for all.
I mean, Stranger Things yields no introduction, right? The nostalgic, supernatural horror-fantasy is perhaps the biggest jewel in the crown of Netflix’s success.
If you’re somehow out of the loop, Stranger Things takes place in the 1980s in the quaint town of Hawkins, Indiana. When a teenager goes missing, his friends investigate the disappearance, slowly uncovering a hellish parallel world, the Upside Down, where there lurk all sorts of monsters — all of them inspired by classic Dungeons & Dragons characters.
The series is a must-watch for any Netflix subscriber. The show’s hugely anticipated fifth and final season premieres later this year!
