Soon to be celebrating its 30th Anniversary, Netflix is set to be the recipient, at least in the US, of a special collection of episodes from the original series that began airing in 1996 and has ultimately run for 1,167 episodes so far, with weekly releases still ongoing in Japan.
Netflix will soon be home to a curated selection of Detective Conan episodes, marking the first time the iconic anime has been made available on the platform in the U.S. These episodes, designed to spotlight key arcs for both longtime fans and newcomers, will also include entries that have never previously streamed stateside.
Launching on July 3rd, the debut batch, titled Conan vs. The Black Organization, centers on the show’s infamous villains and will be available with both English subtitles and an all-new English dub. Netflix and Crunchyroll will share streaming rights to the curated episodes.
Created by Gosho Aoyama and Kazunari Kouchi with Kobun Shizuno as director, the series has stood the test of time. For those unfamiliar, the long-running series follows high school detective Shinichi Kudo, who is ambushed during an investigation and forced to ingest a mysterious poison that transforms him into a child. Assuming a new identity as Conan Edogawa, he moves in with his childhood friend Ran Mori and her detective father, all while secretly pursuing the shadowy Black Organization responsible for his condition. With the body of a child but the mind of an adult, Conan works tirelessly to crack cases and uncover the one and only truth.
Netflix is not entirely new to the Detective Conan franchise in the US, having picked up a couple of spin-offs in the past, including The Cultprit Hanzawa, most recently in February 2023, and Zero’s Tea Time in July 2022. Other movies from the franchise, as well as the original series, are available on Netflix, but only in select Asian regions, including Japan, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. Japan has the most comprehensive collection, carrying collections 1 through 28, with other regions having the earliest collections and some of the newer ones.
This was a relatively last-minute addition to the Netflix anime slate for July 2025, which we’re keeping tabs on in the link provided. Don’t forget too that we’ve got the full list of everything coming up on Netflix throughout July here.
The move to put Detective Conan on Netflix comes as part of an expansion plan by TMS Entertainment to drive more viewers to the franchise and celebrate its 30th anniversary. In addition to the Netflix drop, the Anime! on TMS YouTube channel will be hosting every single Detective Conan theatrical film.
