Avatar: The Last Airbender Renewed For Seasons 2 And 3 At Netflix
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 is in full production right now, and we’ve got some new pieces of information as production continues through to the end of the year. Let’s dig in.
There have already been several new additions to the Avatar cast in its upcoming seasons. Perhaps most notable is the arrival of Miya Cech as fan-favorite blind bandit Toph Beifong, who becomes a key figure in the ‘Gaang’. Other newcomers include Chin Han (Long Feng), Hoa Xuande (Professor Zei), Justin Chien (King Kuei), Amanda Zhou (Joo Dee), Crystal Yu (Lady Beifong), Terry Chen (Jeong Jeong), Dolly de Leon (Lo and Li), Dichen Lachman (Avatar Yangchen), Lourdes Faberes (General Sung), and Rekha Sharma (Amita).
For season 3, Netflix recently confirmed that Jon Jon Briones will play Piandao and Tantoo Cardinal will play Hama. Julie Tao has also joined in an unknown role, according to reports, as well as Adam Beach joining as Hakoda (who we’ll discuss in a second).
New Descriptions for New Characters Joining ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘ Seasons 2 and 3.
Thanks to casting calls that we’ve obtained, we can now reveal more characters appearing in season 3, with one likely being the cast Adam Beach—more on that in a second. While we have official character descriptions, the character names are almost certainly placeholders or codenames – a practice the series has maintained since the first season. The names we have are: Carlos, Kenji, Ohta, Yuto, and Professor Shun. Below, you can find the descriptions for each character. Three of them are listed as recurring.
Carlos / Hakoda
As Deadline first reported, this role went to Adam Beach, a fan-casting favorite for the role. This character could signal a deviation from the original series, as he is described as “more committed to his job than to his family.” In the animated series, he’s fiercely protective of his family. His emotional struggle in leave them behind to lead the Southern Water Tribe, goes to show that.
“Character is male, 40s – mid-50s, Indigenous. A strong leader who is more committed to his job than to his family and he doesn’t know how to fix that. RECURRING GUEST STAR”
Kenji
We’re expecting this character to be Master Piandao, who is Sokka’s sword master in season 3. If it is Piandao, Jon Jon Briones has already been cast in this role.
There is a character called Kenji in the original series, but it’s unlikely that this is him. A zookeeper in the kingdom of Ba Sing Se, Kenji’s one and only appearance comes in the iconic Tales of Ba Sing Se episode, in which Aang meets him in his search for Appa.
“Character is male, 40s-60s, East Asian / Southeast Asian. A vagabond who’s been living a rough life for quite some time. Underneath his roguish exterior, he’s a bit of a philosopher and a rebel. Fight/Sword experience a plus. RECURRING GUEST STAR.”
Ohta
Ohta sounds like Uncle Iroh, but of course, he already appeared in season 1. This sounds a little like Jeong Jeong, but could be someone new entirely.
“Character is male, 60s-70s, Asian. A tireless mentor who uses his superpowers (wisdom and strength) to better humanity. Still nimble after all these years. Martial arts/fighting experience a plus. RECURRING GUEST STAR”
Yuto
There’s no character named Yuto in the original series. The description gives off Fire Nation vibes. Perhaps he’s a new commander at the high-security Fire Nation prison, The Boiling Rock. Another speculation about who this is is Yon Rha, the retired Fire Nation commander who originally killed Katara’s mother.
“Character is male, 50s-60s, Asian. Sadistic military commander whose retirement hasn’t quelled his intensity. ONE EPISODE GUEST STAR.”
Professor Shun
The professor’s title leads me towards Ba Sing Se University. There was a University professor in the original called Shaw. Whether this is a remixed version of him remains to be seen.
“Character is male, late 20s-30s, Asian. Playful, clever and unspoiled by the wider world, he marches to the beat of his own drum. GUEST STAR”
Filming under the codename of DINER BEAR, season 3 is scheduled to wrap on November 7, 2025.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 was filmed on location in Iceland.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender wrapped filming in March 2025, before quickly moving on to film its third and final season. Filming is still ongoing on the show’s final season, mostly in its primary filming location of Vancouver, but a chunk of the third and final season was also filmed on location in Iceland. Reports of this began to surface when star Gordon Cormier (Aang) shared photos on Instagram of himself and the cast sightseeing in the country. When fans pointed out that the show was likely in Iceland, the images Cormier shared were promptly taken down.
However, a report from Knight Edge Media has confirmed that filming did take place in Iceland from May 25th through June 24th. It’s unclear which scenes were filmed here, but given that season 3 covers the animated show’s Book 3: Fire, it seems likely that it could be the setting for the Fire Nation. There are way over 100 volcanoes in Iceland, after all, so it makes for some dramatic landscapes. There’s been some speculation that the iconic scene of Piandao training Sokka may be one of the key scenes filmed.
Directors on Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3

And finally, while on the subject of production for season 3, let’s run through the confirmed directors for season 3 thus far, which includes a newcomer to the series. First up, Jabbar Raisani is returning to the director’s chair, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. He’s directed multiple episodes thus far and naturally has a big role in the series as a producing director. Rachel Goldberg is the newcomer to the show, though. The veteran, award-winning director has been involved with shows like Agatha All Along for Disney+, Gen V for Prime Video, Resident Evil and Raising Dion for Netflix, and other favorites like American Sinners and Mayans M.C.
Season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender is showrun by Christine Boylan, featuring returning writers from seasons 1 and 2, including Keely MacDonald, Gabriel Llanas, Helen Shang, Teresa Huang, Phinneas Kiyomura, and Emily Kim.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but sometime in early 2026 is a solid estimate. Since season 3 is being filmed back-to-back with season 2, it shouldn’t be too far behind. Netflix’s entire Avatar saga could end completely in 2026, but we’ll wait to hear more.
