Following up on the massive success of the first two films, Netflix’s hit action franchise Extraction is officially moving forward with its highly anticipated third installment, which has taken a hot minute to get off the ground following its initial announcement back at TUDUM 2023. Tyler Rake is gearing up for his next deadly mission, and after months of anticipation, we finally have boots on the ground with new updates directly from Australia.

Here is your comprehensive, fully updated preview of Extraction 3, tracking everything from returning cast members and exciting behind-the-scenes shakeups to the latest production updates hot out of Australia.

Who is returning for Extraction 3?

Tyler Rake is bringing some familiar faces along for the ride. As we broke earlier this year, the following core cast members are locked in:

  • Chris Hemsworth has officially closed his deal to reprise the role of unstoppable mercenary Tyler Rake.
  • Golshifteh Farahani returns as Nik Khan, Rake’s trusted handler, mercenary partner, and closest ally.
  • Idris Elba is confirmed to return as the mysterious operative known only as Alcott (or “The Man in the Suit”). Elba made a pivotal surprise cameo at the end of Extraction 2, springing Rake and Nik from prison in exchange for them doing a job for his enigmatic boss.

Who is behind Extraction 3?

The “Action Dream Team” is largely reassembling for the third movie, though with a major shakeup in the writer’s room.

Sam Hargrave, who transitioned from legendary stunt coordinator to a top-tier action director with the first two films, is officially back in the director’s chair.

However, while Joe Russo penned the previous two installments, scripting duties for the third film have been handed over to David Weil (Citadel, Hunters). The film’s characters remain based on the graphic novel Ciudad, written by Ande Parks.

Behind the scenes, the Russo Brothers’ AGBO banner continues to produce, alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Wild State. Thanks to updated production listings, here is the massive roster of producers and creatives bringing the sequel to life:

  • AGBO Producers: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, Ari Costa, and Mike Larocca.
  • Wild State Producers: Chris Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson.
  • Other Producers: Sam Hargrave, Patrick Newall (who also serves as Line Producer), Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin.
  • Executive Producers: Steven V. Scavelli and Shelby Malone.
  • Co-Producer: Anthony J. Vorhies.
  • Production Design: Peter Wenham.
  • Casting: Sarah Finn (the casting mastermind behind the MCU).
  • Executive in Charge of Post Production: Michael Morgan.

What is the production status of Extraction 3?

Official Production Status: Filming (Last Updated: July 24, 2026)

After a long wait—largely due to Hemsworth’s packed schedule filming Avengers: Doomsday and the upcoming Kockroach—cameras are officially rolling!

As we previously reported, the sequel was eyeing a summer 2026 start date. Today, thanks to a brand-new press release, we can confirm that filming has officially commenced on the NSW South Coast and in Sydney, Australia.

Production Start Extraction 3

The shift to Australia marks a significant homecoming for lead star Chris Hemsworth. While Extraction 2 was initially slated to film in Sydney, COVID-19 lockdowns famously forced that production to relocate to Prague and Vienna. By landing in Sydney for the third entry, Hargrave and Hemsworth are finally getting the Aussie-based shoot they’ve been chasing since 2021.

Director Sam Hargrave shared his excitement in today’s press release:

“We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our Extraction saga here in New South Wales. Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with Extraction 3, we’re taking our biggest swing yet.”

The massive production is set to create 450 local jobs and contribute an estimated $127 million to the local economy. It is heavily supported by the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund.

Producer Patrick Newall noted the tremendous cooperation from local officials, adding: “This is a big movie and these invaluable partners have all helped make our production here possible.” Netflix’s APAC Director of Production Policy, Debra Richards, also chimed in, noting the streamer’s thrill to bring a project of this magnitude to local crews.

According to our updated production grids, filming is expected to run from early July through early October 2026. While earlier rumors pointed to a European leg of the shoot, current production documents confirm the shoot is taking place across Sydney, the NSW South Coast, and Thailand.

The Expanding Extraction Universe

Extraction 3 isn’t the only project in the pipeline. Netflix and AGBO have been aggressively expanding the franchise into a massive cinematic universe.

As we recently covered, two major spin-offs have already wrapped production and will likely hit the service before the third flagship movie:

  • Mercenary (TV Series): An eight-episode global thriller starring Omar Sy (Lupin) as a soldier-for-hire navigating a high-stakes hostage rescue in Libya. Showrun by Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead).
  • Tygo (Spin-off Film): A South Korean actioner starring Don Lee (Train to Busan, Eternals) as a former child-soldier turned mercenary on a vengeance-fueled tear. Directed by Lee Sang-yong.

When will Extraction 3 release on Netflix?

Given the October 2026 wrap date, we are still quite a ways off from seeing Tyler Rake back on our screens.

Extraction 2 wrapped filming in March 2022 and hit Netflix in June 2023—a 15-month turnaround. If the third film follows a similar post-production schedule to its predecessor, we are realistically looking at a Late Summer or Fall 2027 release date.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on set photos and casting news as production continues throughout the summer. Bookmark this page, as we’ll be keeping it updated with all the latest!
