After Wingwomen in 2023, Netflix once again calls on Mélanie Laurent for a new series project, which has been shooting since early summer. Here is everything we know — for now — on original series La Grande.
Mélanie Laurent has been in demand in both movies and series in the past decade; as it happens, a lot of her work has been seen on competing platforms lately. Last spring, she was fronting thriller The Hunt for Apple TV+; she delivered two movies where she was in the director’s seat with Prime Video: The Mad Women’s Ball, then Freedom. And then, there is extensive work for Netflix as an actress and director. She was starring in 6 Underground in 2019, and fronting Oxygen by Alexandre Aja in 2021; she then directed and costarred in genre thriller Wingwomen in 2023. And, right after a recurring role in the fifth season of Fauda (releasing September 8th on Netflix) and the female lead in Un Bon Avocat (releasing later this fall), she will be at the helm of a new original series entitled La Grande.
What is La Grande about?
Per the official logline:
Seven years after her escape, Tara returns to the place where she spent her childhood to save Callista, her little sister, from their toxic and perverse mother Karen. At the risk of her own downfall, she starts a fight to make Karen lose custody of her sister. A gripping epic about the healing power of love, loosely based on real events.
Who is starring in La Grande?
Award-winning actress Marina Hands is set to play the lead, presumably as Karen. She won a César for her performance in Lady Chatterley, and has enjoyed a steady career in a string of major movie roles in the early 2000s. She also was seen as the lead of dark comedy Mythomaniac, which was a global Netflix original after its broadcast on Arte.
The other female lead (presumably Tara) is set to be played by Marie Colomb, an up-and-coming actress who has made waves in the TV industry after strong character work in premium dramas. She received a Rising Star Award at Canneséries in 2025, and was the lead in true crime drama Laetitia (broadcast on HBO) in 2021, as late reality-TV star Loana Petrucciani in Culte (Prime Video), and in thriller Follow; all these performances earned her critical acclaim.
What else do we know on the series?
Produced by First Love and Studio 14 Films, the project has been quietly shooting since early June in the Paris area and in the Hauts-de-France area (Oise). Mélanie Laurent is set to direct the 7 episodes of roughly 40 minutes; the project is also presented as a miniseries, meaning there are no plans for additional seasons. It is being created and written by veteran series writer Marine Francou (Spiral, A French Village), and actor/writer Pharell Pisieczko; Clayd Genestet is also credited as a writer. No release timetable is set, though we can expect it in late 2027 on the platform.
