Lena Dunham’s newest comedy series, Too Much, recently debuted on Netflix. But after an abysmal opening week, is Too Much ripe for the chopping block at Netflix? It’s still too early to tell, but if something doesn’t change soon, then the future of Too Much on Netflix is looking bleak.
Too Much is a Netflix Original comedy series created by Lena Dunham and Luis Felber. Dunham worked on the series as a writer, producer, and director. Universal International Studios is the studio behind the production of Too Much. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who previously worked with Dunham on Catherine Called Birdy, are producers on the series via Working Title Television. Camilla Bray is also a producer via her production Rosetta Productions, and so too is Mark Freeland.
The series is centered on Jessica, a 30-something New Yorker and workaholic, who, still reeling and brokenhearted from the end of her relationship, moves to London after taking a new job. Her plan is still to live a life of solitude in London, as she swears off relationships and love, that is, until she meets Felix.
Too Much season 2 Netflix renewal status
Official Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 16/07/2025)
At the time of writing, Netflix has yet to announce the renewal of Too Much. Considering the series’ start on Netflix, a renewal is unlikely.
The series debuted on Netflix on July 10, 2025, and was intended to be the big release of the week. Unfortunately for Netflix, the series has struggled significantly and failed to make a dent in the weekly global top tens in its debut week.
Too Much received less than 2 million views in its opening week, which is why the series has been omitted from the global top ten list this week. The series has only made it into the weekly top 10 list of eight countries.
Here’s how other comedy shows that were renewed on Netflix have performed.
A start like this is a disaster for any Netflix Original, but it doesn’t mean this is the end of Too Much on Netflix. Lena Dunham recently signed a new overall deal with Netflix, which means she’s committed to producing more content for the streaming service, including her upcoming film with Natalie Portman, Good Sex. Although there’s no confirmation of this, it’s possible that as part of the Dunhams’ new deal with Netflix, Too Much could have received a renewal upfront, regardless of its performance.
Based on performance alone, the opening week would typically spell disaster and certain cancellation for a brand-new series. Unless there are other factors at play and we witness a significant turnaround in the series’ views, cancellation is highly likely.

Does Too Much need a second season?
You can make arguments for both yes and no, for a second season.
First of all, if the series were to end now, then Jess would have gotten her wish of marrying the man she loves. While questions remain over their future, ultimately, love prevailed, and Jess and Felix drive off into the sunset as newlyweds.

A second season would naturally take an even further look into the marriage and relationship between Jess and Felix. The second season could catch up with the pair on their honeymoon, starting on a massive high before we see the pair settle into married life, and once they get to know each other further, rifts could open in the relationship, which they will have to overcome.
At the very least, Lena Dunham has confirmed she wanted to leave the audience questioning where the couple goes from here:
“I wanted the finale to leave us inspired, but also going, ‘They haven’t known each other that long.’ It’s that dual feeling of totally embracing it and also wondering, ‘Are they going to be divorced in three months?
It has to be subtle and emotional, considering he just cheated on her about four days ago. Is this a great idea? It feels good, but things that feel good aren’t always right. Those are the questions we’re asking while still getting to have the joy of the wedding.”
