Christopher Nolan is back on the big screen! Today marks the theatrical debut of The Odyssey, the visionary director’s highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. With an all-star cast and groundbreaking IMAX visuals, it’s already shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the year. But if you’re wondering when you can stream The Odyssey from the comfort of your living room on Netflix, here’s our current release date prediction.
Releasing in theaters worldwide today, July 17, 2026, The Odyssey sees Christopher Nolan teaming up with Universal Pictures once again following the massive success of his Best Picture winner, Oppenheimer.
The film stars Matt Damon as King Odysseus, chronicling his perilous ten-year journey home following the Trojan War. The jaw-dropping ensemble cast also features Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway (as Penelope), Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Shot entirely on IMAX cameras, the movie promises a grounded, tactile take on the ancient world.
It probably comes as no surprise that the movie is on for a monster time at the box office in addition to picking up glowing reviews from audiences and critics alike.
If you aren’t heading out to the cinemas this weekend, when will it be streaming? Because of a unique contract, you might be waiting a little longer than usual. Here’s what we know.
When will The Odyssey be on Netflix in the United States?
As we covered earlier this year, Netflix recently secured a major win by moving its “first window” Pay-1 rights for Universal Pictures’ live-action slate to begin a full year early in 2026. This means that instead of Prime Video taking the initial streaming rights, Netflix is now the exclusive home for Universal’s biggest blockbusters shortly after they wrap up their theatrical runs, which is why we’ve seen big hits like How to Train Your Dragon, Wicked, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 hit Netflix.
Under this current agreement, standard Universal live-action movies follow a very specific release pipeline:
- An exclusive theatrical window of at least five weekends, per the New York Times.
- An initial streaming window on Peacock for 4 months.
- A 10-month exclusive streaming window on Netflix.
- A final 4-month return to Peacock.
Furthermore, if the movie performs like Oppenheimer at the box office, Universal will likely stretch that theatrical run even further. Oppenheimer released in July 2023 but didn’t hit Peacock until February 2024—a massive seven-month gap.
Assuming The Odyssey enjoys a similarly long, lucrative run on the big screen before Universal moves it to its streaming pipeline, here is our estimated release timeline:
- Estimated Peacock Release: February or March 2027
- Estimated Netflix Release: June or July 2027
If you can’t wait until next summer to get your Universal movie fix on Netflix, don’t worry—the pipeline is absolutely packed. We’ve got plenty of other major releases on the horizon under this new deal, including Curry Barker’s supernatural dark comedy Obsession.
When will The Odyssey be on Netflix Internationally?
If you live outside of the United States, your wait time to stream The Odyssey will depend entirely on your region’s specific, localized deal with Universal Pictures.
- Central Europe and parts of Latin America typically receive Universal movies in the first pay window. If that holds true, you can likely expect to see The Odyssey arrive sometime in late 2027.
- The UK and Canada generally have to wait a little longer, usually around two full years after the theatrical premiere. For subscribers in these regions, it’s safer to estimate a mid-to-late 2028 release.
- Other regions could be waiting up to 36 months, so you might be better off seeking the film out on VOD platforms late next year.
