It’s game over for What’s in the Box?. Netflix has reportedly opted not to renew the Neil Patrick Harris-hosted reality competition series for a second season, making it the latest casualty in the streamer’s unscripted library.
The scoop comes courtesy of veteran television reporter Matt Mitovich (formerly of TVLine). In a recent Q&A mailbag on his new independent blog (via NetflixLife), a reader named Maddy asked if Netflix was planning a sophomore outing for the game show. Mitovich poured cold water on the idea, responding:
“I am hearing there are no plans at this time for more episodes of the Neil Patrick Harris-hosted game show.”
While Netflix rarely issues formal cancellation press releases for its unscripted fare, “no plans at this time” is the standard industry death knell for reality series that quietly fail to hit internal viewership milestones.
For those who may have missed it, What’s in the Box? dropped all six episodes of its freshman run late last year on December 17th, 2025. The show appeared in the daily top 10s in a handful of countries, including Canada, Malta, South Africa, and a few others. It missed the weekly global top 10s, however, and according to the Netflix Engagement Report, clocked in 9.3M viewing hours and 2.1M views through the end of the year.
Hosted by Emmy and Tony-winner Neil Patrick Harris (who previously helmed similar unscripted ventures like Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris and Genius Junior), the series featured eight pairs of contestants competing in fast-paced trivia. The goal? Earning the right to open 13 enormous gold boxes to claim—and ruthlessly defend—life-changing prizes. The season culminated in the top-performing duo playing for the “Super Box,” which held a grand prize worth over $250,000.
So, why didn’t Netflix want to see what else was in the box?
As we often cover here at What’s on Netflix, the reality and game show genres are notoriously cutthroat on the platform. If an unscripted show doesn’t immediately enter the cultural zeitgeist (like Squid Game: The Challenge or Perfect Match) or show immense completion rates, it rarely gets a second lease on life. Dropping right in the middle of the crowded December holiday window likely didn’t help the show’s chances, as it seemingly struggled to make a sustained dent in the Global Top 10s amid a sea of heavy-hitting winter releases.
What’s in the Box? now joins the growing list of one-and-done game shows on Netflix, proving once again that while the streamer is eager to crack the traditional game show format, finding a sticky, long-lasting hit remains a tough puzzle to solve.
We reached out to Netflix, which declined to comment.
We’ll soon be adding the show to our complete list of 2026 cancellations.
