Sex And The City From Hbo Coming To Netflix

Netflix is continuing its pickup of older HBO titles, with Sex and the City scheduled to arrive in the coming months.

First debuting in 1998, the HBO romantic comedy series followed the lives of four women living in New York City. It was created by Darren Star, who has been working with Netflix recently on the smash-shit Emily in Paris and Uncoupled. The series was headlined by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Cattrall.

The show ran for six seasons in its initial run but later spawned multiple movies, plus the more recently released And Just Like That… continuation that was released exclusively on Max in 2021 and will soon be going into its third season.

Journalist Dylan Byers, who works for the outlet Puck News, posted the news of Sex and the City coming to Netflix on Twitter, saying:

“Warner Bros. Discovery has agreed to license HBO’s “Sex & The City” to Netflix. WBD has been seeking add’l revenue via licensing deals that were once anathema to the walled-garden strategy. All deals to date are old shows, not new hits, (of which HBO has many).”

Details on how and when Sex and the City will be coming to Netflix aren’t quite concrete. Following Byer’s tweet, the NYTimes cited multiple sources stating the series is due to be released in April 2024. Another key detail will be about region availability. Given the US coverage of the show’s addition, it’s very likely the show will be part of the Netflix US lineup, but it’s unclear what that means for international regions.

Netflix began picking up HBO titles for the first time in its history in 2023, with Band of Brothers, Insecure, and Ballers among the initial slate. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max, praised the initiative, saying, “What’s been nice about it is, without doing a thing on Max, the viewership of Ballers and Insecure [on Max] really saw a spike when it was on Netflix.”

For the most part, all the HBO shows that have come to Netflix so far have been for the US, but other regions like select European territories and Latin American countries also got them. In one case, True Blood, the series skipped releasing on Netflix US and only came to Netflix in international territories.

Also coming up on Netflix from HBO is Warriors, the former Cinemax turned Max exclusive, which will see all three seasons drop in mid-February 2024. We’re keeping track of all of HBO’s content on Netflix and what’s coming next here.
