Stranger Things marketing is in full force for the final season. This week, we got two massive profiles on the fifth and final season, in addition to a tease from Empire’s upcoming coverage. We’ve had lots of new photos from this dump, and datamining them has given us some clues about when they’re set and what we can expect. Here’s a complete recap of everything we learned this week!

Before we dig into the cover story, a reminder that at the very beginning of the week, we got the official runtimes for season 5 volume 1. As a reminder:

  • Chapter One: The Crawl – 1 hour and 8 minutes
  • Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler – 54 minutes
  • Chapter Three: The Turnbow Trap – 1 hour and 6 minutes
  • Chapter Four: Sorcerer – 1 hour and 23 minutes

Then, Variety on October 15th posted their big cover story where the cast, crew, and Netflix’s head of content spoke to the trade with new BTS and one new photo from the new season. We did summarize the biggest news in our article from earlier in the week, but as a reminder, the key points were:

  • Episode structure: Eight episodes total. Most are around an hour long, with Episode 4 titled “Sorcerer” running 83 minutes, and the series finale, “The Rightside Up”, running about two hours.
  • Story timeline: The new season picks up 18 months after Season 4. The characters have all returned to Hawkins, which is now under military quarantine.
  • Major reveals coming: The Duffers confirm that Season 5 will finally explain what the Upside Down is. “We have to now!” said Ross Duffer. Matt added, “This is a complete story. It’s done.”
  • Budget and scope: Reported at $50–60 million per episode, making it one of the most expensive TV productions ever. Netflix’s Bela Bajaria said, “We want to spend as much money as it takes to realize the vision of what’s on the page.”
  • Return to Hawkins means tighter focus: With all characters now in one place, the Duffers say the story “feels smaller and more intimate” compared to Season 4, though the scale remains cinematic.
  • Series finale vision: The Duffers have known the ending “for years.” Ross said they studied finales like Six Feet Under, Friday Night Lights, and The Sopranos to guide the tone. “The best ones were very true to themselves,” he said.
  • Emotional farewells: Each actor’s final shot doubles as their real last day of filming. “The last 35–40 minutes are us processing the end of the show and saying goodbye,” said Ross Duffer. “These people weren’t acting in this moment.”
  • Limited theatrical event blocked: Matt Duffer wanted the finale to screen in cinemas, saying fans deserve “to experience it at the same time with other fans” and “to see the work that goes into sound and picture.” Netflix’s Bela Bajaria rejected the idea, saying, “It’s giving the fans what they want – releasing it on Netflix.”
  • Spinoff tease: A follow-up is in development, with it taking place in “a bit of a different world” but with “connective tissue.” Duffers will produce but not be as directly involved as the main show.
  • Future beyond Netflix: The Duffers are moving to Paramount in 2026 under a new four-year deal but remain involved with Netflix projects, including The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.

Next up, TIME Magazine posted its exclusive coverage on October 16th, alongside the cover photo for its upcoming issue, which goes on sale today (October 17th). There were lots of reveals from the extended first look.

Stranger Things Spoilers had a good summary of some of the main story plot points that were covered in the cover story in the first volume:

– Eleven is being hunted by a group called “The Wolf Pack,” led by a new scientist, Dr. Kay. The government’s involvement is way heavier this time.

– Vecna is missing when the season starts. The gang’s main mission is to find him while dodging a military quarantine trying to cover up the portal disaster from Season 4.

– Max is still in coma midway through the season but clearly important. it’s being implied that she’ll be enlisted in a plan to fight the villain.

– The action is massive. Stuntmen are literally being thrown into the air, and the show is shot like a full-scale blockbuster, not standard TV.

– Finn Wolfhard said the action is more physically demanding than ever, he even trained with a coach.

– Barb’s body shows up again on set, maybe in a vision or Upside Down flashback.

Elsewhere, the Stranger Things team spoke to TIME about the pressure of ending one of Netflix’s biggest shows and reflecting on growing up in the spotlight. The Duffer brothers admitted feeling nervous about living up to past seasons, with Matt calling the pressure “a little scary” and Ross saying they didn’t want to “scale down for your final season.” Finn Wolfhard compared their worries to Game of Thrones’ controversial finale, adding that reading the scripts reassured them it was “something special.”

As for the show’s future, Matt Duffer said Netflix hasn’t pressured them to pitch a sequel, while Netflix’s Bela Bajaria emphasized the priority is finishing the series strong, though she’s “ready” when they are. Matt noted that any continuation must come from genuine inspiration, not corporate demand, to avoid “diminishing the brand.”

The cast reflected on their coming-of-age experiences. Millie Bobby Brown discussed how her character’s isolated upbringing made Eleven harder to write, and Noah Schnapp recalled support from Winona Ryder early in his career, his journey coming out, and lessons learned about navigating fame online. Wolfhard described the chaos of child stardom and learning to assert himself, while Caleb McLaughlin said reuniting with friends on set brings out his “most childish” self. Sadie Sink credited The Whale for deepening her emotional range and expressed gratitude to the Duffers for keeping her character alive, with Matt Duffer saying Sink is “too good not to keep.” Gaten Matarazzo said he’d “jump” at the chance to revisit Dustin in 15 years.

Finally, and not to be outdone, Empire also went live later that day after TIME, revealing their covers for an upcoming magazine (that goes on sale here from October 23rd). We didn’t get many quotes or actual reveals (they’re being saved for the actual issue), but we did get three epic new visuals. We’ve got the main cover at the top of the article (which we’ve cleaned up), the new photo of Lucas being backed into a corner by the Demogorgon, and an “exclusive subscriber cover by Greg Ruth” depicting Eleven and Vecna being connected:
