The big day is here. After a pretty good tease of season 5 during TUDUM (in addition to the three-volume release dates), we’ve finally got a fresh new look at Stranger Things season 5 courtesy of a brand new teaser trailer. This post will be our comprehensive review of all the latest assets that have just dropped for the show ahead of its return this November.
Note: This will be updated throughout the day as new information becomes available.
There has been a slow build-up to this new teaser trailer, beginning with some leaks towards the end of May (as we’ve covered here) and more official teasers over the past week, courtesy of Ross Duffer himself and then Netflix’s social media accounts, starting Friday and continuing over the weekend. Many had suspected that a trailer would be bound for Netflix yesterday, given that July 15th marks the 9th anniversary of the season 1 release.
While the teaser didn’t drop for the ninth anniversary, a new poster did. That poster evokes nostalgia by featuring the original four boys with Eleven riding on Mike’s bike, while hinting that Will Byers will play a central leadership role in the final season. In the background, Vecna appears as a horned, devil-like figure looming over a burning Hawkins, signaling the continued threat of the Upside Down. A mysterious radio tower linked to the W.S.Q.K. station also appears, possibly hinting at its significance to the plot.

As we reported, at 10a ET, Netflix dropped the official trailer. It teases several ominous developments. Aside from Vecna’s reemergence, it hints at the grim fate of certain characters, with Nancy seen washing blood off her hands in tears, suggesting that Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) or Steve (Joe Keery) may perish. It also revisits Will’s lingering connection to the Upside Down, showing once again the hair on the back of his neck standing on end whenever Vecna is near, a mystery that remains unexplained.
According to Ross Duffer, the teaser trailer pulls footage “mostly” from Volume 1 and doesn’t have any footage from episode 7.
Here it is in full:
Overnight, some first-look photos for the new season leaked from the account Hawkins Happenings, with help from TuSubtitulo, an account that consistently seems to have the inside scoop on big Netflix announcements. Those were quickly removed due to a DMCA complaint, and for obvious reasons, we won’t be posting them here until they’ve been officially released. We will, however, be including all the new photos that MovieWeb has dropped ahead of the trailer going live. (Note: What’s on Netflix was not sent any embargoes by Netflix.)
In the teaser by Ross Duffer for the trailer, he gave us a glimpse at the first-ever mockup poster for the series when it was under the working title of Montauk, which was a reference to the Montauk Project. He refers to the poster as the poster “Matt and I [Ross] photoshopped back in 2015 when we were first pitching the show. It’s been a wild ride.”

For the most part, the cast of the show has been tight-lipped on the new season. Earlier this month, Linda Hamilton spoke with ComingSoon and teased what we can expect. Hamilton says working on Stranger Things was even more intense than her biggest blockbuster films. “It was even more than a movie,” she explained, noting that it took an entire year to shoot just eight episodes. “I’ve never been on a project for a year. Six months is the biggest—Terminator, Dante’s Peak, things like that. Used to be six-month shoots and hardly anybody does that anymore, but to carry on for a year…”
Because of the show’s huge scale, production schedules were constantly shifting due to weather and logistics, keeping her in a state of constant preparation. “It was being in a sort of state of readiness to race to Atlanta for an entire year at any given moment,” she said. “So that was really interesting. Like ready to pounce, ready to pounce, and to just, you know, nail the character in the way that she deserves.” Despite the long, high-pressure process that saw the actress thrown in the deep end with action scenes in her first week, Hamilton’s excitement for the final season was evident. “I can’t wait.”
Stranger Things 5 is coming to Netflix in three parts: Volume 1 (Episodes 1-4) on November 26th, followed by Volume 2 (Episodes 5-7) on Christmas Day, and the Finale (Episode 8) on New Year’s Eve. Each volume releases at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET.
