July 2025 was a decent month for Netflix shows. Notably, it was dominated by The Sandman, which aired 12 episodes across three separate batch releases. Looking ahead to what’s in store for August, the return of the beloved series Wednesday is undoubtedly the standout show. In addition to that, there’s also a brand new British crime series, Hostage, a new animated series from the creator of BoJack Horseman, as well as a few more potential hits.
As always, we’ll split this article up into two sections. First, we’ll cover all the best Netflix Original series before digging into the list of a couple of licensed series we’re most excited for.

Tyler Perry’s work at Netflix has been pretty successful. This is the second series he’s written in partnership with Netflix. Plus, of course, he also penned The Six Triple Eight.
Hostage
Coming to Netflix: August 21
From Toxic Town to Adolescence, 2025 has been a standout year for British dramas on Netflix. Next up is Hostage, a new limited series from Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster), who both produces and stars in the series.
Hostage begins when the British prime minister’s husband is kidnapped. As investigations escalate, the French president stars receiving threatening messages. It’s a game of blackmail and impossible choices.
Also starring: Julie Delpy (The Before trilogy, the Three Colors trilogy), Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, The Sandman), and Lucian Msamati (Conclave, Gangs of London).

From Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of legendary Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman, comes Long Story Short. An animated sitcom, the series chronicles the lives of a family over time, following the Schwooper siblings in childhood and adulthood… and back again.
This series boasts an all-star cast, including Lisa Edelstein, Paul Reiser, Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson, Max Greenfield, Angelique Cabral, Nicole Byer, and recurring guests Dave Franco and Michaela Dietz.
Given that BoJack Horseman is regarded as one of the greatest TV shows ever made, if Long Story Short can capture even a little of the same essence, Netflix has another hit on its hands.
My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2
Coming to Netflix: August 28
My Life with the Walter Boys debuted on Netflix in 2023. The first season garnered decent ratings. Viewership was good too, reaching the Global English Top 10 charts in 88 countries. Netflix promptly renewed the series for a second season, which drops this August.
The upcoming second season continues Jackie’s (Nikki Rodriguez) journey as she returns to Silver Falls. “Season 2 is bigger and better,” creator Melanie Halsall told Netflix TUDUM. “We’ve got massive set pieces in each episode, and the stories are more intricate. We found our feet with our characters, [and] the actors really understand their characters now. When I was coming back, I was excited to start shooting again because I knew we had great stories to tell.”
Be sure to catch up with season 1, now streaming on Netflix!

Best New Licensed Series Coming to Netflix in August 2025
Love Life (Seasons 1-2)
Coming to Netflix: August 5th
In recent years, HBO Max has purged many of its initial shows, with many never finding new homes. As we first reported earlier this month, we’re happy to say that Love Life, the anthology romantic drama series, will find a new streaming home, at least temporarily, on Netflix beginning in August 2025 in the US.
Hollywood superstar Anna Kendrick headlines the first season with William Jackson Harper following up for a sublime second season. The basic premise of the show is that we follow two subjects navigating life through New York City, with each episode chronicling one of their relationships from first love to last love. It’s a heartwarming series that didn’t get its due when it initially released, but hopefully can now find new life courtesy of Netflix.
Quantum Leap (Seasons 1-2)
Coming to Netflix: August 14th
Another show cut short that will be hoping to find new life on Netflix in August will be the continuation/reboot/revival of Quantum Leap, which had two short seasons on NBC before the plug got pulled. While the show is not quite up to par with the original series, it certainly had something new and fresh to say with a powerful performance from its lead, Raymond Lee. The plot of the series is basically the same as the original, with the sci-fi body swapping and time jumping premise staying largely intact.
