Following the bombshell news that the original run of Gilmore Girls is exiting Netflix in the United States (and other select regions), fans might be looking to the 2016 revival for comfort. Unfortunately, we have bad news on that front, too.

Netflix has confirmed to us that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will be departing the platform globally later this year.

As we previously reported, Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will depart Netflix in the US and select other countries on July 1st, 2026. While Netflix has confirmed that the flagship series will remain available in several international territories, the fate of the revival is a different story.

A representative for Netflix confirmed to us on background that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will remain available on the platform until November 24, 2026.

This means the four-part limited series will officially be removed from Netflix worldwide on November 25th, 2026.

Why is a “Netflix Original” leaving?

To many subscribers, the idea of a “Netflix Original” leaving the service seems counterintuitive. If Netflix made it, shouldn’t it stay on Netflix forever?

The reality of streaming licensing is a bit more complicated. A Year in the Life was not produced entirely in-house by Netflix. Instead, it was produced in association with Warner Bros. Television, who owns the underlying intellectual property for the Gilmore Girls franchise.

When Netflix commissioned the revival, they essentially paid Warner Bros. for an exclusive, global streaming window. That window was exactly ten years. Because A Year in the Life premiered on Netflix on November 25, 2016, the contract naturally expires on November 25, 2026.

We have seen this happen before with other high-profile co-productions bearing the Netflix Original badge, including the Marvel Defenders series (like Daredevil and Jessica Jones) going to Disney+, and Hemlock Grove leaving the service. Plus, countless other Netflix Originals have been removed

Where will the revival go next?

With Warner Bros. Discovery aggressively consolidating its top-tier franchises to bolster its own streaming service, it is all but guaranteed that A Year in the Life will make its way over to Max once its Netflix window expires, but don’t count out licensing it to other platforms and streamers either.

What does this mean for A Year in the Life Season 2?

Ever since Rory dropped those infamous “final four words,” fans have been begging for a second season of the revival to tie up the cliffhanger.

While series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has always kept the door slightly ajar for a return to Stars Hollow, the expiration of Netflix’s rights changes where any revival would call home. Because Netflix no longer holds the rights to the franchise, any future iterations, spin-offs, or a potential A Year in the Life: Season 2 would bypass Netflix entirely.

If we ever do get to see what happens next with Lorelai and Rory, our best guess is that it would almost certainly be commissioned as an exclusive for Max.

For now, fans worldwide have until late November to squeeze in their final viewings of “Winter,” “Spring,” “Summer,” and “Fall.”
