Filming for the second season of Netflix’s most ambitious sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, has begun or will begin very soon, and we have already started getting more and more details about the upcoming season of the drama from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
Previously, we reported that award-winning Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon director Miguel Sapochnik is joining 3 Body Problem along with award-winning House of the Dragon cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt, making that a Thrones reunion of sorts, along with Thrones director Jeremy Podeswa also returning for Season 2. As we covered much earlier in the year, 3 Body Problem’s second and third seasons have moved to Hungary from the UK for production.
Today, we have some casting news for 3 Body Problem Season 2.
Four new roles are being cast for 3 Body Problem Season 2
We’ve learned that Netflix is casting four new roles for 3 Body Problem Season 2. They are two leads and two recurring:
- Captain Van Rijn (Lead): She is described as a woman around 40. Van Rijn is a badass military leader who is also physically fit and great at her job.
- Ayla (Lead): Ayla is described as a woman in her 20s, but mature for her age. She is well-kept, astute, smart, and overall brilliant. The role will likely extend to Season 3.
- Gil (Recurring): Gil is described as a man in his 30s. He’s a very smart, likeable, charming scientist, but also a person who’s willing to make difficult and unpopular choices if necessary.
- Major Kirby (Recurring): Major Kirby is a woman in her 20s or 30s. Very capable and professional in her job, but also capable of emotional intensity.
Update: Following our report, Deadline announced that Claudia Doumit (The Boys) will play the role of Captain Van Rijn and Ellie De Lange (Wolf Hall) as Ayla.

Before that confirmation from Deadline, we noted that Captain Van Rijn is a role perfect for Gwendoline Christie, who played Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. We also noted how showrunners Benioff and Weiss do love to cast their old Thrones alums in 3 Body Problem.
As a reminder, Season 2 and 3 will be the final seasons for the series and will be filmed back to back. One source mentioned January 2026 as the wrap date for Season 2 with Season 2 potentially starting production a few months after that. Another source claimed that filming for both seasons is expected to last until August 2027 with a break planned sometime in between seasons. We’re still confirming which is the case since the information is a bit all over the place at the moment.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed when Season 2 of 3 Body Problem will be released, but Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos listed the show among returning titles for 2026 during an earnings interview. Therefore, a late 2026 release might be a possibility, as production is only just starting now.
