With the 3 Body Problem set to return with its second season in 2026, we now have news that, after a short break, filming for the third season will get underway in Hungary in June 2026 and continue for the remainder of the year, with the expectation that it will be released sometime in 2027.
3 Body Problem is Netflix’s new big-budget science fiction series created by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, with Alexander Woo. The series is an adaptation of the beloved and thought-provoking novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin. It remains one of the most expensive shows ever produced by Netflix, with a ginormous $20 million-per-episode budget.
The series debuted on Netflix on March 21, 2024, and despite the high-profile cast, production value, and popularity of the novel, it underperformed, garnering fewer than 50 million views during its 7 weeks on Netflix’s global top ten list. Despite the underwhelming performance, the series has been praised by viewers and critics alike and ultimately renewed for two more seasons, with a reduced episode count for the second season.
Filming for the second season has already been completed, with production moving to Hungary from August 2025 to January 2026. The second season is due to be released sometime in 2026.
We previously reported in April 2025 that filming for the second and third seasons would take place back-to-back, but at the time, Netflix did not respond to our request for comment on the Hungarian tax filing, which revealed the production plans. It has now been reported in issue 1501 of Production Weekly that filming is scheduled to take place in Hungary between June 2026 and December 2026.
Official dates have yet to be announced, so filming dates are subject to change and could push production of the third season into early 2027, as we previously reported.
