Later in 2026, Netflix will release Breakers, an 8-episode surfing drama headlined by Antony Starr (The Boys, Banshee, Guy Richie’s The Covenant). The series makes history, becoming the largest production in Western Australia history. Here’s everything we know so far about Breakers

After finishing his iconic role as super-villain Homelander in Prime Video’s The Boys, Antony Starr will next return to our screens in Breakers, an upcoming series cited as both a psychological drama and a thriller. It follows two backpackers from the United Stares who travel to Australia and are sucked into a seemingly perfect surfing community, led by Brando (Starr) — a charismatic, yet mysterious figure.

Consisting of 8 episodes, Breakers makes history in becoming the largest production ever to take place in Western Australia. The area lends itself to being the home of surfing dramas thanks to its picturesque coastlines and generous waves. In fact, the WA-filmed movie The Surfer (2024), starring Nicolas Cage, was also filmed in the area.

According to a post from InnerCircle Entertainment, the production of Breakers has had a substantial commercial impact, injecting $19 million into the WA economy, employing over 100 local cast and crew. Its production coincides with the launch of Perth Film Studios, a new state-of-the-art complex hoping to bring WA productions to the forefront of global entertainment.

Breakers has a stellar creative team behind it. It’s created by Pete Jackson (not to be confused with New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson), who serves as showrunner. The series is co-directed by Mary Nighy (Say Nothing, Industry) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like for a Girl, Femme). Additionally, it’s executive produced by Gavin O’Grady (Somewhere Boy, This Way Up), Petra Fried (Baby Reindeer, The End of the F***ing World), Wim De Greef (Baby Reindeer, The End of the F***ing World). It is a production between BBC Studios’ Clerkenwell Films and BBC Studios Productions Australia.

The cast and crew have so far remained quiet regarding the series, although Antony Starr has teased that it’s “gonna be a banger.”

What is Breakers about?

With elements both psychological and thrilling, Breakers takes place in a tight-knit surfing club where two newcomers learn that it’s more than a just a friendly retreat — it gives off cult vibes with unsettling rituals. The full logline is below:

“Two American friends backpacking through Australia stumble upon what seems like paradise in a remote surf commune. Welcomed into the tight-knit club, they revel in the waves, freedom, and camaraderie—until they begin to sense something darker beneath the sun-soaked surface. As a member mysteriously vanishes and the group’s rituals grow increasingly unsettling, the friends realize they’ve been drawn into a dangerous cult. Trapped between loyalty and fear, they must uncover the truth and fight to survive before they, too, are swept under.”

Who has been cast in Breakers?

Breakers is headlined by Antony Starr, who plays Brando, the leader of the seemingly-friendly surfing club. This series marks the first time that Starr has worked on a Netflix Original series. Starr has been an avid surfer from childhood — this role is the culmination of a lifetime hobby,

Netflix has not officially confirmed any other casting, but we already know of several other stars involved, many of them hailing from Australia and known for Australian dramas; three of them are all veterans of Heartbreak High
