If you’re a fan of classic sketch comedy, you’ll want to clear your schedule for the beginning of next month. All six seasons of the legendary comedy series Second City Television (better known as SCTV) are expected to drop on Netflix on September 1st in multiple regions of the streaming service, including the United States.
Originating from the Toronto branch of the famed Second City improv troupe, SCTV originally ran from 1976 to 1984. Set at a fictional, low-budget television station in the town of Melonville, the show served as a launchpad for a generation of comedy icons.
According to our intel, Netflix has acquired the rights to all 135 episodes of the beloved series. The massive drop is expected to arrive on Tuesday, September 1st.
While the exact list of regions receiving the show is still being finalized, we can confirm that Netflix in the United States and the United Kingdom will definitely be picking it up, alongside most other international regions.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Amazon’s Prime Video had secured rights to the sketch series, but only in Canada. As reported by C21Media at the time, “Prime Video in Canada has picked up the exclusive rights to Second City Television (aka SCTV), the legendary sketch show that launched the careers of comedy icons including Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, John Candy and Martin Short.”
Back then, many assumed Amazon had locked down the exclusive global streaming rights. Fortunately for Netflix subscribers outside of Canada, Netflix has successfully swooped in to license the historic show for its own libraries in the US, UK, and beyond.
Where You’ve Seen the SCTV Cast on Netflix
If you’ve watched any comedy in the last four decades, you’re already familiar with the alumni of SCTV. But you might not realize just how prevalent these legends have been in the Netflix library over the years.
Here’s a quick look at the cast and where you might have spotted them on Netflix:
- Catherine O’Hara – A vital member of the troupe, O’Hara has been a fixture on Netflix. Aside from the global sensation Schitt’s Creek (which exploded into a mainstream phenomenon largely thanks to its long-running syndication on Netflix), she starred in the 2023 Netflix Original film Pain Hustlers alongside Emily Blunt, played Justice Strauss in the Original series A Series of Unfortunate Events, and lent her voice to the animated hit The Last Kids on Earth.
- Martin Short – Famous for characters like the eccentric Ed Grimley on SCTV, Short has had a stellar run on the platform. He teamed up with Steve Martin for the acclaimed 2018 Netflix Original comedy special An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life. He also voiced Father Willoughby in the animated feature The Willoughbys and had a hilarious recurring guest role as Dr. Franff in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
- Eugene Levy – Known for his deadpan delivery and characters like hapless news anchor Earl Camembert, Levy also found a massive new audience when Schitt’s Creek arrived on Netflix.
- John Candy & Harold Ramis – Both late comedy titans got early boosts on SCTV. While they don’t have dedicated Netflix Originals, Candy (Uncle Buck, Planes, Trains & Automobiles) and Ramis (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day) frequently pop up when their classic ’80s and ’90s films cycle through the Netflix licensing library.
- Andrea Martin – Famous for the leopard-print-wearing station manager Edith Prickley, Martin is a legendary comedic force.
- Joe Flaherty – The man behind Count Floyd and Guy Caballero sadly passed away earlier this decade. Long-time Netflix subscribers will recognize him as Harold Weir from the cult classic Freaks and Geeks (a staple of the Netflix library for many years) or from his unforgettable turn in the Adam Sandler classic Happy Gilmore.
