If you thought you could quickly catch up on that long list of shows on Netflix you’ve wanted to watch, you better speed things up. That list is about to get longer as Netflix will introduce 71 new Original shows in 2017 and that doesn’t even include kids’ series, documentaries, movies and non-English shows.
So don’t worry, it’ll be a long time before you run out of things to watch every evening (or day, depending on your level of procrastination). The FX president John Landgraf estimated that 2016 would be the year to hit ‘peak TV’ but recently said 2017 would have more TV shows than this year. This is mainly down to streaming services like Netflix and Amazon due to the speed at which they can release new content.
Landgraf initially predicted a decline in the production of shows in 2017 but has now said that it won’t happen until at least 2019. Some of the shows we can expect to see in 2017 on Netflix include One Day at a Time, Gypsy, Wheelman, Llama Llama, Watership Down and Dark.
Netflix has high hopes and ambitions, though, which was shown earlier this year when it stated it would spend $6.5 billion on programming in 2016. This is more than any other US TV network and as a result, the company raised their prices for the US and foreign users. Netflix is also spending more on Original series that are produced in foreign languages in the attempt to reach customers in newer markets.
There’s no doubt that the number of Original series that will hit our screens is impressive so keep an eye out for all the new upcoming shows – it’s going to be a great year. After all, it’s more than the future line up for HBO, Showtime, Starz and FX collectively.
We’ll have a full preview of everything that’s coming to Netflix in 2017 by the end of December but until then here’s a quick list of what’s coming up.
