Derek Leaves Netflix Us

Derek – Channel 4 / Netflix

The Netflix Original series Derek has left Netflix in the United States on April 3rd, 2019. Titles come and go from Netflix all the time but the reason this is significant is that Derek is actually a Netflix Original.

The series starring Ricky Gervais is another heart-tugger from the famed British comedian. It’s based on a character called Derek who helps out in a care home.

Update: Derek has returned to Netflix as of April 5th, 2019!

Why has Derek left Netflix?

The series is considered a Global Original so for many, the removal will come at a bit of a surprise. Despite being classed as a Netflix Original the series was actually first broadcasted and owned by Channel 4 in the UK.

Many regions still have Derek streaming including the UK where the series is not classed as an Original although the UK is set to lose season 2 later in April.

Our take on this is something we’ve been saying for quite some time now. Netflix needs to be a bit better at clarifying as to what is a full Netflix Original and what’s not.

Ricky Gervais’s content on Netflix in the US has been significantly stripped back on Netflix recently. The removal of Derek also came days after Netflix pulled lots of BBC content which includes Gervais’s first sitcom, The Office.

With that said, his Original stand-up from last year is still available with another on the way in 2019. After Life also just got greenlit for a second season on Netflix too.

Where will Derek stream in the US now?

No new streaming home has been announced and although we could find physical editions of the show, there are no video-on-demand platforms carrying Derek currently.

The Killing also left Netflix even though it carried the Netflix banner (only for the later seasons). However, The Killing ironically found its way onto every platform other than Netflix. Both Hulu and Amazon currently streaming all four seasons including the Netflix exclusive fourth season.

Another Netflix Original series is also scheduled to leave Netflix later in April 2019 with Matt Lucas’s Pompidou also scheduled to leave. Likewise, Netflix exclusively distributed the show abroad although it aired on the BBC in the United Kingdom first.

Will you miss Derek now it has left Netflix?
