Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City returned to Netflix on June 7th two decades after it originally wrapped up on Showtime. If you’re looking for more, you may be disappointed to hear there won’t be a season 2 of Tales of the City.

The prequel series to the PBS, ShowTime and Channel 4 shows which aired in the last 1990s and 2000s was a bit of a surprise when it was first announced all the way back in June 2017.

The development took two years but eventually landed on Netflix on June 7th, 2019.

Although based on the novel series of the same name, Tales of the City was adapted for a modern audience if you consider it was first written in the late 1970s.

Will Tales of the City return for season 2 on Netflix?

Official renewal status: not yet renewed (last updated: 06/15/2019)

Despite some spectacular reviews for the continuation of the show, it’s in all likelihood not going to be returning for a second season.

The biggest and most obvious reason for this is that the series is dubbed as a Limited Series. Netflix often calls mini-series like this a limited series when it only intended a single season going in.

Potentially another reason for the lack of a second season is possible because of the nature of its all-star cast. The series returns with some big star names who all have busy schedules. Many of the stars, in fact, have other commitments with Netflix themselves.

Ellen Page is returning for the second season of The Umbrella Academy while Laura Linney will be returning for Ozark season 3.

As we mentioned above, the show is based on the novel series and therefore is limited by its material. We know Tales of the City is a prequel series to More Tales of the City and Further Tales of the City but that doesn’t mean there’s not more material to cover.

Netflix could look at securing future series for the remaining books which includes:

  • Babycakes (1984)
  • Significant Others (1987)
  • Sure of You (1989)
  • Michael Tolliver Lives (2007)
  • Mary Ann in Autumn (2010)
  • The Days of Anna Madrigal (2014)

All of these novels haven’t been adapted into TV series, yet. Netflix could work out deals to adapt the future novels in the future and that’d allow for new cast members to be drawn in possibly even to replace any crossover cast members.

Will the Original ‘More Tales of the City’ or ‘Further Tales of the City’ be on Netflix?

The original shows remain away from streaming. Sadly, this has been the case in many cases for reboots for Netflix. The biggest example is Fuller House where Netflix was unable to pick up the original Full House series.

Sadly, streaming rights are often super tricky, especially given how many networks and production companies were involved in the original series.

At this point in time, you’ll have to rely on VoD services to watch as nowhere is streaming the original.

Do you hope to see more Armistead Maupin’s novels adapted on Netflix or hope to see a second season of Tales of the City? Let us know in the comments.
