A throwback anime from the ’90s is coming to Netflix on January 15, 2026! It is expected that all 49 episodes of the dark fantasy anime Magic Knight Rayearth will be available. Magic Knight Rayearth is a Japanese dark-fantasy isekai anime series that aired on the NNS network in Japan between October 17, 1994, and November 27, 1995. A total of 45 episodes were broadcast during its run. The anime is an adaptation of Clamp’s manga of the same name, which ran for six volumes between November 1993 and April 1996.
The anime was directed by Toshihiro Hirano and produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. The cast starred Hekiru Shiina (Megami Paradise) as Hikaru Shidou, Konami Yoshida (Ultimate Muscle) as Umi Ryuuzaki, and Hiroko Kasahara (Rurouni Kenshin) as Fuu Hououji.

What is the plot of Magic Knight Rayearth?
Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji, three teenage girls and strangers, all meet while their schools are on a field trip to Tokyo Tower. The trio is swept away to a strange new world and informed by Master Mage Clef that the Princess Emeraude has summoned them to fulfill their destinies as Magic Knights and save the world of Cephiro from evil.
Is the new Magic Knight Rayearth series coming to Netflix?
In 2024, as part of the manga’s 30th anniversary celebration, it was announced that a remake of the series was in development.
It has been confirmed that the series will be broadcast in Japan on TV Asahi in 2026. However, at the time of writing, there is no confirmation if the anime series will be coming to Netflix or another streaming service later this year.
Speculation time. It’s possible that with the addition of the 90s anime series, the remake could be coming to Netflix outside of Japan. Or that the licensing of the original anime means Netflix is testing the waters before committing to securing a deal for the remake.
