In a recent interview, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega mentioned that the series was “coming to a head,” making fans worried that it could be ending sooner rather than later. Are fans reading too much into it?
Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, alongside legendary filmmaker Tim Burton, Netflix’s Wednesday is the most popular English-language series on Netflix, and the second most popular show in the platform’s illustrious history, behind only Squid Game. Based on the beloved Addams Family characters, the series is headlined by Jenna Ortega, who has played the titular gothic icon for two seasons beginning in 2022, and she will return in late 2027 for the show’s third season. However, Ortega’s future as Wednesday Addams beyond the third installment remains a little uncertain — and the 23-year-old actress herself has recently hinted that the series is “coming to a head.”
In the show’s first season, Wednesday Addams celebrates her sixteenth birthday, making her significantly older than her traditional counterparts. Rather than being the young, rebellious child of the family, in the Netflix show, she attends Nevermore Academy, the boarding school for supernatural outcasts. Morbid and macabre, she struggles to make friends, but ultimately strikes up a bond with Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), the polar opposite of her — but they manage to make it work as roommates, and later as friends. Rather than keep her head down, Wednesday fuels her insatiable need for morbid fascination by becoming a detective, solving supernatural mysteries within Nevermore.
By the end of Season 2, Wednesday managed to solve her biggest case yet, ultimately defeating mad scientist Isaac Knight (Owen Painter) and then exposing Principal Dort (Steve Buscemi) as a con man working for a cult. However, her tasks were still not complete: at the very end, she embarks on a quest with her Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) to track down Enid, who disappeared into the woods in full alpha werewolf form.
In Season 3, co-showrunner Alfred Gough has promised the introduction of more Addams Family members — including Eva Green as Aunt Ophelia — and the uncovering of additional family secrets. What’s more, the upcoming season takes a brief hiatus from Nevermore Academy, shifting location to the City of Love itself: Paris. It’s clear that Season 3 is pulling out all the stops to be the most ambitious yet. The season has been filming almost right through 2026 so far, beginning back in February in Dublin and relocating to the French capital in April. Naturally, filming Wednesday takes up a vast majority of Jenna Ortega’s time; it’s been a constant since she started filming Season 1 in 2021. Once it’s wrapped, she’s excited to pursue other projects.
“I’ve been in this experimental phase,” she told Esquire about her career in a recent interview. “It’s only been in the last year or so—especially with the show coming to a head and getting ready to enter this next chapter in my life and career—that I’ve really honed in. I’ve seen some things now. I’ve tried some things. Now it’s important to me to be focused on stories and characters that I feel truly connected to.”
Of course, we don’t intend to be twisting Ortega’s words; she does not explicitly mention that Wednesday is ending. She is voicing her desire to explore more mature projects outside of Wednesday, Plus, the show is such a tentpole series on Netflix that it’s unlikely to end so soon, with so many unresolved plot lines. Ortega saying that the series is “coming to a head” could suggest the ending of a major plot line rather than the conclusion of the entire series.
All of that said, fans are interpreting the quote in several ways across social media. “Those definitely sound like ‘end’ words, which is interesting,” one user commented. Meanwhile, another user took away that she merely intends to tackle more adult roles. “No, Netflix is not going to let this show end,” they wrote. “I think she just means that she is going take more adult roles.”
The comment has certainly caused a stir, with many voicing their interpretations of her comments:

That statement does not confirm that Wednesday is ending or that there won't be more seasons. It just means the show is reaching a climax in its storyline and that she, on a personal level, is getting ready for new projects in her career. Besides, it's a hit series on Netflix,

What have the Wednesday showrunners said about the show’s lifespan?
We can deduce from Jenna Ortega’s recent comments that Wednesday is possibly headed towards its conclusion. When we look at previous comments from creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, they have previously hinted about being in the three-to-four season ballpark. “You always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters,” Miles Millar explained to Variety back when the show debuted on Netflix. “It can evolve and change. Often, you want to see which characters or cast pop and who you like to write for. So you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve.”
“We certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons,” he added.
Obviously, a lot has evolved since he made those comments; indeed, Wednesday has become a cornerstone show on Netflix. Whether that has bolstered their plans to expand the main series beyond their original plan remains to be seen. After Season 2, Millar was increasingly confident in expanding the franchise. “We’ll take as many seasons as Netflix wants to give us,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Even if Wednesday ends, Netflix is already pursuing spin-off projects.

When it comes to Netflix’s biggest TV shows, the game plan almost always involves spinoffs. Look no further than Bridgerton, of which the show already has one popular spinoff, and the creators are keen on more. The spinoff angle also reins true for Wednesday, with star Fred Armisen previously confirming that a spinoff centred on his fan-favorite character Uncle Fester is in the works. “Yeah, we’re working on it. It’s fantastic… it’s amazing,” he said on The Tonight Show in 2025.
While spinoff projects would naturally go in their own directions, there’d no doubt be ample opportunities for Jenna Ortega to reprise her beloved role, if only for supporting appearances.
If Wednesday reaches an early conclusion (and let’s make it clear that nothing is official), Netflix will be far from done with The Addams Family. When a show is as popular as Wednesday, we’re in it for the long haul.
