While we’ve already covered the exciting news about a brand-new Sonic animated series headed to the streamer, the partnership is also bringing two major live-action feature films to Netflix: a highly anticipated comedy adaptation of Crazy Taxi and a gritty crime drama based on STRANGER THAN HEAVEN.
Here’s everything you need to know about the two live-action feature films coming out of the landmark Netflix and SEGA deal.
Crazy Taxi (Live-Action Comedy Film)
Since its arcade debut in 1999, Crazy Taxi has been an absolute staple of gaming history. Now, the fearless, clock-racing, ramp-jumping cabbies are heading to Netflix in a live-action comedy film.
To capture the game’s chaotic, comedic spirit, Netflix has tapped writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the beloved writing duo behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun.

Producing the film are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher for Original Film, alongside SEGA’s Toru Nakahara—the very same visionary producing team responsible for turning the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe into a massive global blockbuster franchise.
For 90s and 2000s gamers, this adaptation promises to be a nostalgia trip. As producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher teased:
“We couldn’t be more excited to continue our longstanding relationship with SEGA and bring Crazy Taxi to life with our partners at Netflix. This film is for anyone who’s spent hours behind the wheel of a yellow cab on their Dreamcast, with the music cranked up, smashing through everything in sight just to make the next fare.”
Toru Nakahara added that fans should expect something “hilariously crazy” from the upcoming film.
The adaptation perfectly aligns with SEGA’s revitalization of the franchise; a brand new game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is currently scheduled for release in 2027.
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN (Live-Action Crime Film)
On the complete opposite end of the genre spectrum is STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. Details are currently being kept tightly under wraps, but SEGA and Netflix have confirmed a live-action film adaptation is in the works with Toru Nakahara attached to produce.
The IP comes straight from RGG Studio, the legendary developers behind the massively successful Like a Dragon / Yakuza series (which boasts over 30 million copies sold).
Set in early 20th-century Japan, STRANGER THAN HEAVEN follows the gripping journey of a foreigner who claws his way up the societal ladder—going from a destitute stranger to a feared yakuza, and ultimately, an entertainment tycoon. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing nation, the story explores how he builds his empire while balancing honor and betrayal.
Nakahara has already hyped up the project, promising fans a “badass action drama.” Given RGG Studio’s pedigree for incredible cinematic storytelling, crime, and high-stakes drama, this is definitely one to keep on your radar.
Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up. With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, we get to work across three completely different eras of SEGA’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences.”
Shuji Utsumi, President and COO of SEGA, echoed this sentiment, praising Netflix’s “real craft” and dedication to storytelling.
“We’ve watched Netflix take on stories across every kind of format and treat each one with real craft, and seeing that same dedication applied to Sonic, Crazy Taxi, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is something we at SEGA are incredibly proud to be a part of,” said Utsumi, adding, “The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honors what makes each title special, and we know Netflix shares that commitment. This is just the start of what these titles can become.”
Netflix’s huge video game adaptation slate includes animated iterations of Minecraft and Clash of Clans plus live-action titles like Gears of War and Assassin’s Creed.
