Sony Pictures has been pushing its Spider-Man license from Marvel to the extreme in recent years. Just this year, it launched Venom and now comes the release of the animated Spider-Man movie called “Into the Spider-verse”. Sadly, if you’re going to waiting for it to stream, Netflix probably won’t be your destination.
The project has now been in development for over four years and represents Sony’s creativity with the Spider-man license which it still owns. After the relative flops of the Andrew Garfield movies, Sony Pictures worked to correct where it went wrong. It worked out a deal with Marvel to allow him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve also see Venom, a classic Spidey villain get his solo outing and now Into the Spiderverse.
The animated title hits cinemas on December 14th and features a big cast including Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack Johnson and Lily Tomlin.
Why Into the Spider-Verse Won’t be on Netflix
Sadly, Into the Spider-verse probably won’t be coming to Netflix, at least as part of any pre-existing deal anyway. As you know, Netflix and Disney have an arrangement but because Sony owns the rights to Spider-man, it isn’t covered.
Netflix has occasionally gotten Spider-man movies, however. Netflix UK was recipient to each of the “Amazing Spider-man” movies and more recently, Netflix US got Spider-Man 3 which is due for removal in December.
Will other Netflix regions get Into the Spider-Verse?
It’s unlikely. We couldn’t find any regions that had a contract with Sony and no region is currently streaming Homecoming and it’s a little too early for Venom to drop on streaming networks just yet.
As always, we’ll update should anything change but if you want to watch Into the Spider-Verse your best bet is to either hit the cinemas in December or wait for it to come on VoD services.
