Welcome to your weekly rundown of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 hourly figures drop for the week ending July 6th, 2025. Lots to cover this week, including big holds for Squid Game season 3 and KPOP Demon Hunters, plus the debuts of a new Trainwreck documentary and The Old Guard 2, which returned after five years.

As always, you can dive deeper into the Netflix Top 10s using our tools, such as our search tool, country search, or Engagement Report search, which should be getting a big update next week!

Note: In this report of Netflix’s hours viewed from June 30th, 2025 to July 6th, 2025, we’ll use “Complete Viewings Equivalent,” or CVE, expressed in millions. That means we divide the hours viewed announced by Netflix by the runtime of films or series. It allows for better comparisons between films and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last second of the film or season.

1. The Old Guard 2

Five years after the release of the first The Old Guard film, the sequel has finally arrived on our screens following a troubled production, and it scored the 7th-best launch for a Wednesday release since June 2021, with 37.5M CVEs in its first five days. That’s solid, but just this year, the German film Exterritorial did better, and likely cost much less to make.

Even though it’s a bit early for this kind of estimate, I’d say the film is on track to reach around 60M EVCs after 28 days, whereas the first film reached 88.4M EVCs over the same period. The Old Guard 2 also tries to play it smart by ending on a cliffhanger that sets up a third film. Not sure Netflix will greenlight it with numbers like these — but you never know.

2. KPop Demon Hunters holds like the sensation it has become.

This week marks a bit of an event with the strong hold of the animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which delivered a third week almost identical to its second, with only a slight drop of 6.2%. It’s the best hold week-to-week from weeks 2 to 3 for a Friday release.

We’ll see how long the film can maintain this trend, but its soundtrack is still riding high on the charts across various music streaming platforms, so it might still have some fuel left in the tank for another week or two.

3. Straw

As for Straw by Tyler Perry, it’s definitely going to fall short of breaking into the all-time Top 10, as the film lands the 17th-best launch for an English-language Netflix film over its first 28 days, with 104.7M CVEs. Still, that’s a pretty remarkable performance.

4. Shark Whisperer

With Shark Whisperer, it’s clear that Netflix is hoping to replicate the modest success of My Octopus Teacher, which made quite an impression when it was released — even going on to win the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2021. However, so far, both critics and audiences haven’t really shown up, with only 6.1 million CVEs in its first seven days. It’s decent, but nothing special, even with the boost from Shark Week.

5. Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel

New week, a new Trainwreck documentary. This time, focusing on the American Apparel brand. The launch is off to a solid start with 7.8M CVEs over its first six days, a notch above the previous Trainwreck entries, Poop Cruise aside, which was a breakout hit last week. Makes you wonder if Poop Cruise’s success might have spilled over and given this follow-up doc a bit of a boost.

6. Squid Game season 3

Momentum is already starting to slow a bit for Squid Game Season 3, which, to be honest, was expected. There’s nothing particularly surprising here, as each season of Squid Game has followed the same pattern: a bigger launch than the one before, but ultimately ending up with lower overall numbers. How far will Squid Game Season 3 go? I’m inclined to set a range between 140M and 160M CVEs over its first 91 days — but we’ll see how it plays out!

7. Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers

There haven’t been many docuseries released on a Tuesday this year, so we have to look a bit further back to find comparisons and assess the launch of this new true crime series focusing on the 2005 terrorist attacks in London. The debut is fairly average, with 4.7M EVCs over its first six days — lower than that of another British true crime series, Who Killed Jill Dando?.

8. The Sandman

It’s time for The Sandman to wrap up, as after a last-minute renewal, Season 2A has launched quite underwhelmingly, which was expected once again. The fact that this is only the first half of the season should theoretically boost its numbers, but if this is the best the series can do, this final season is coming just in time (not to mention all the controversies surrounding Neil Gaiman, the original creator).

The Sandman Season 2 Viewership Struggles

When comparing that launch to other season 2 debuts on a Thursday, we can see that The Sandman 2 would probably have been at risk of cancellation right out of the gate, so it might have been the best choice to end it on its own terms, with a batched release over the summer.

9. Tour de France: Unchained, season 3

Another series that won’t be getting another season is the French documentary Tour de France: Unchained, which Netflix has cancelled, ending with Season 3. This third season launched closely following Season 2’s numbers, with a fairly gentle decline. But overall, the figures remain too low in the bigger Netflix landscape, so the streamer decided to pull the plug.
