One of the biggest British shows in the past couple of years had undoubtedly been Fleabag. The comedy series created and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge has rave reviews and therefore, is highly sought after in the age of the streaming wars. But will it be on Netflix? Let’s take a look.
The BBC have been less-known for their British comedies in recent years with most hits seemingly coming from Channel 4 which Netflix has managed to nab a few. “It’s The End of the F***ing World” comes immediately to mind.
The limited comedy series which has run for two seasons is adapted from the play about a young woman coping with life in London.
Among the stars for the show is Olivia Colman who is, of course, about to star in The Crown season 3.
Will Fleabag be coming to Netflix in the United States?
Sadly, Fleabag isn’t streaming on Netflix in the US right now, nor is it looking like it will be.
In a recent interview with Reed Hastings, he revealed to Variety that they did intend for Fleabag to come to Netflix. An intense bidding war took place to stream the title but ultimately, Netflix lost out to Amazon who proved they wanted it far more than Netflix.
Amazon picked up streaming rights in the United States and the United Kingdom back in 2016.
Will Fleabag be on Netflix in other regions?
It’s unlikely. Netflix leads the charge with its acquisitions usually in the United States or another English speaking country. Given the show is relatively outside of the zeitgeist at this point, it’s unlikely Netflix will acquire Fleabag in any other region. If anything, Amazon will likely extend their current offering to other regions.
Shows similar to Fleabag on Netflix
The good news is that Netflix does has some similar offerings to Fleabag on its service.
If you’re looking for female-led comedies, look no further than Workin’ Moms from Canada and The Let Down from Australia. Both are about new mothers navigating the new complicated world of motherhood.
Another comedy with two leading ladies is Dead to Me. The series was a smash hit for Netflix and is a full Netflix Original.
