Pictures: Netflix
Netflix Animation Studios has finally pulled back the curtain on its highly anticipated animated feature, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, revealing an all-star voice cast, exciting new plot details, and a massive global theatrical release plan for late 2027.
Here at What’s on Netflix, we’ve been keeping a close eye on this one ever since we got our first taste of the footage at Annecy (which, I will be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of). Now, the picture is coming into full focus for one of the crown jewels of Netflix’s expanding Roald Dahl universe, which the company is in full control of.
When is Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory coming to theaters and Netflix?
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will receive a wide global theatrical release on November 5th, 2027, with Sony Pictures Entertainment handling the international theatrical distribution.
Following its exclusive theatrical window, the film will make its global streaming debut on Netflix on December 22nd, 2027—just in time for the holidays.
Of course, many will point out that this suggests Netflix is moving closer to adopting full theatrical releases, and you’d be right, to an extent, although it’s really just for big titles with a lot of internal buzz for the time being.
We’ve seen this playbook evolving over the last year, from the KPop Demon Hunters Singalong runs and the massive 600+ theater rollout for Stranger Things: The Finale at the end of 2025, to upcoming tentpoles. In fact, Netflix is employing a similar strategy for the upcoming David Fincher/Quentin Tarantino/Brad Pitt project (hitting IMAX globally for two weeks this November before its Christmas streaming drop) and next year’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew (which gets a wide/IMAX theatrical release in February 2027 before hitting Netflix in April). That’s not to mention many of Netflix’s big awards movie are getting extensive theatrical windows this Fall.
Whether it’s growing pressure or just seeing it as a way to get more eyeballs and use theaters as a marketing tool, we’ll leave that up to you… Our view is that the strategy has shifted but is fluid on a title by title basis.
Who is in the cast of Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory?
We already knew that Heartstopper superstar Kit Connor was lending his voice to a newly reimagined teenage Charlie Paley, alongside Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi as the eccentric Willy Wonka. But today, Netflix announced a massive wave of A-list talent joining full cast:
- Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton, The Magic Faraway Tree)
- Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton, ONE PIECE)
- Samson Kayo (F1: The Movie, Bloods)
- Christopher Chung (Slow Horses, My Brilliant Career)
- Kate Winslet (The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
- Helena Bonham Carter (One Life, Nolly) — Fun fact for Dahl fans: Bonham Carter previously played Mrs. Bucket in Tim Burton’s 2005 live-action adaptation!

What is the new movie about?
Directed by Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie) and Elaine Bogan (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia), this film is described as an “imaginative, fresh, and deliciously unhinged” new take on the beloved universe.
Here is the official synopsis provided by Netflix:
“Willy Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world.
But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of “rotten” kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew…”
Taika Waititi, who also serves as an Executive Producer alongside producers Aron Warner (Shrek) and Timothy Yoo, shared his enthusiasm for stepping into the legendary top hat: “He’s so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius — if a little mischievous at times — is hugely exciting.”
Directors Stern and Bogan said in a previous statement: “Having been raised on the delightfully twisted world of Willy Wonka, it’s a privilege to bring his continued adventures to life as twisted adults. And how sweet to do it like never before via the magic of animation, creating a Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory that’s more deliciously unhinged than your wildest imagination. If we do a rotten job, you can throw us down a rubbish chute!”
Of course, you can’t launch a Wonka movie without some real-life treats. Netflix has confirmed a massive global collaboration with the Ferrero Group. Starting this fall, fans in the US and select European markets (including the UK, France, Italy, and Germany) will see a new Wonka range featuring 10 seasonal and limited-edition products across chocolate, sugar confectionery, ice cream, and cereal.
Additionally, Moose Toys has been tapped as the master toy partner, with an innovative new line of toys slated to launch closer to the film’s release in 2027
