First Look at ‘The Empress’ Season 3 As Filming on Final Season Heads to Spain

The Empress received its third and final season renewal in January of this year, and filming finally began as early as September 2025. Now, part way filming, What’s on Netflix can reveal that the final season will also be filmed in a new location: Spain!

In case you missed it, the hit German period drama series, which has been on our screens since September 2022, received a third and final season renewal order earlier this year.

Showrunner Katharina Eyssen said of the renewal at the time, “It sometimes leaves me speechless to see how many people we have been able to reach and touch all over the world with The Empress. To be able to continue and conclude this story together with our team and the unique ensemble cast is nothing less than a gift.”

The Prague Reporter confirmed that filming had begun as late as September 8th in their report, which details that the series is using both nearby studio facilities, specifically Barrandov Studios, in the Czech Republic, as well as taking full advantage of the historic city. The series was shot extensively in Prague for season 2. Unlike for season 2, Netflix’s official German accounts have not confirmed that production is underway.

All 30 Netflix Series Canceled In 2025

The new photos, which can be shown exclusively, feature the main cast in full get-up as they film in the picturesque town of Lloret de Mar, just north of Barcelona. To date, this is thought to be the first time the production has been to Spain, and the reasons for choosing to do so are clear: the beach is absolutely gorgeous.

Lead star Devrim Lingnau, who portrays Elisabeth, was recently spotted filming scenes in the water and in full costume along the beach, joined by fellow cast members Noemi Krausz and Carla Hutterman.

No word on when season 3 of The Empress will premiere on Netflix, but it’s likely to arrive sometime in 2026.
