First set photos have emerged for Netflix’s new “eerie” supernatural thriller, which is being filmed in the most eastern parts of Canada. The yet-to-be-titled limited series, known as Untitled Newfoundland Project, is now in full production.
First revealed to be in the works back in late February 2025, the project is being helmed by The Umbrella Academy co-showrunner Jesse McKeown with renowned directors Jamie Childs, Stephen Dunn, and Helen Shaver on board to direct two episodes each of the six-episode limited series. Following its initial announcement, several cast members have been confirmed, including Josh Hartnett in a leading role alongside Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Natasha Henstridge (Species), and Joshua Close (Fargo).
Filming for the series began in early July 2025 and is scheduled to wrap on or around October 12, 2025.
This new project marks Hartnett’s second-ever major Netflix role, having previously appeared alongside Aaron Paul in the season 6 episode of Black Mirror titled, Beyond the Sea. Elsewhere, the actor is best known for his roles in Pearl Harbor and Penny Dreadful.
According to SplashNews, sources close to the production reveal that the drama centers on Hartnett’s character. He plays a weathered/veteran fisherman who is forced to confront a terrifying sea creature after it begins wreaking havoc on his tight-knit coastal community. Hartnett was filming scenes on a boat in remote areas of Newfoundland on July 19th when these snaps were taken. The series will call home various locations around Newfoundland and Labrador for the next few months.
Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury are the two executives developing the series for Netflix with Hartnett, Jamie Childs, Sharon Hall, Jessica Rhoades, and Louise Sutton serving as executive producers.
