In what might be one of the biggest promotional crossovers in Netflix history, Rockstar Games and Netflix are partnering up to bring an exclusive extended look at the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI to subscribers this August.

If there is one entertainment property that can rival Netflix’s biggest original shows in terms of sheer hype and cultural dominance, it’s Grand Theft Auto. Now, those two worlds are colliding. On August 27th, Netflix will be the exclusive home to a brand new video presentation titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look.

If you’ve been following our coverage of Netflix Games, this massive team-up is still a surprise but not the first collaboration. We’ve known for a while that Netflix and Rockstar Games have been building a cozy relationship. You’ll recall that Netflix previously secured Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for its mobile gaming service—which quickly became one of the platform’s most downloaded hits to date. Following that up, they also brought the beloved western classic Red Dead Redemption to the service. Getting the exclusive rights to premiere the next look at GTA VI feels like a big step up in evolution of that partnership.

It’s also a fun bit of serendipity: The previous iteration in the blockbuster series, GTA V, debuted 13 years ago. If you cast your minds back, that was the exact same year Netflix truly began its aggressive push into original programming.

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series, spoke about the unprecedented collaboration today in a statement:

“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”
