Netflix’s big new adaptation of The Whisper Man is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated psychological thrillers on the streamer’s slate. With a powerhouse cast including Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan, the team recently took to the red carpet—in footage provided by Netflix—to tease exactly what fans can expect from the dark, mystery-laden feature.
Directed by James Ashcroft (Coming Home in the Dark), The Whisper Man is based on the bestselling novel by Alex North. For Ashcroft, getting to direct this specific roster of actors was a dream come true. “I was a kid in a candy store,” the director shared. “It was working with all the legends that I grew up watching… not only are they iconic, but they’re also incredible human beings. I’d love to say it was difficult, but it was so easy.”
While fans of the book already know the chilling premise, the cast and crew are promising an adaptation that will keep even the most eagle-eyed viewers guessing. Here is what the team had to say on the red carpet about bringing the terrifying thriller to life.
Throwing it Back to Classic Psychological Thrillers
If you are a fan of 90s and 2000s serial killer procedurals, The Whisper Man should feel familar. Cast members on the red carpet for the movie, held a few days before the Netflix premiere of the film, were quick to compare the film’s gritty tone to some of the greatest thrillers in cinematic history.
“It’s kind of an underserved genre nowadays,” Michelle Monaghan shared. “Something very reflective in terms of what I watched growing up kind of took me back to like Zodiac, Silence of the Lambs, [and] Mystic River.”
Co-star Owen Teague echoed that sentiment, noting the film’s heavy David Fincher influences. “This is a kind of movie that I haven’t seen done in a long time. It’s kind of a procedural in the vein of like Fincher from, you know, Se7en and Zodiac.”
However, director James Ashcroft was quick to clarify that the film goes deeper than a standard procedural. While Teague lovingly referred to the film as a “whodunit serial killer story,” Ashcroft views it more as a whydunit. “Ultimately, it’s not a whodunit. It’s more of the complexity of the whys and the hows and what will happen next,” Ashcroft explained. “It’s very character-driven rather than just being plot-driven. I think audiences are going to really respond to the complexity of the characters and the relationships more than anything.”

A Story Rooted in Fathers, Sons, and Generational Trauma
Despite the terrifying hunt on the surface, The Whisper Man’s beating heart is a complex family drama.
Author Alex North noted that the original novel was born out of his own experiences. “I just always wanted to write about fathers and sons. At that point, I’d just become a father myself,” North explained. “The film and the story… is about generational trauma. It’s about how we deal with the abuse that’s kind of been meted out to us and not pass it on to our own children.”
Ashcroft expanded on this, noting that the movie explores the entire spectrum of fatherhood. “Fundamentally, it was the theme of fathers and sons… This is a film that has several pairings of fathers and sons, so we see the best of what that relationship can be and we see the worst as well.”
Adam Scott plays one of those fathers, a man trying to reconnect with his estranged son. “When the story starts, the two of them haven’t seen or spoken in many, many years,” Scott explained. “They’re not talking about their feelings with each other. It’s all just behavior. It was a really fun relationship to build and to discover.”
Even cinematic legend Robert De Niro was drawn to the grounded family dynamics. “This particular father and son had issues,” De Niro said. “A lot of families and parents and their kids in some way have… tensions and disagreements and petty beefs with each other… This is all interwoven in a thriller, so it’s a little different.”

Behind-the-Scenes Bonding & Genuine Scares
To portray that close-knit dynamic on screen, Adam Scott made sure to spend some quality time with his on-screen son, played by Acston Luca Porto.
Porto shared a heartwarming behind-the-scenes memory of the duo building their chemistry. “Before shooting with Adam, we had a bonding day and we went to a glow-in-the-dark mini golf arcade place,” Porto recalled. “We got like 30 stuffed animals from all the claw machines and it was so fun.”
But while the on-set vibes were light, the scares in the film are anything but. Both Scott and Monaghan admitted that the script’s twists completely fooled them, with Monaghan laughing, “It had me guessing all the way until the end.”
And as for the film’s terrifying moments? There is one scene involving a mail slot that even the director admits would send him running the other way.
When asked about the scene, Ashcroft—a New Zealand native—laughed about how he would handle the situation in real life. “Well, we don’t have mail slots in New Zealand. We have mailboxes out the front, so I’d never be in that situation. However, I’m not sure I would run out as quickly as Adam does to check. I’m not that brave, I’m ashamed to say.”
