Production: Triple Frontier

The film has been in the works for an incredibly long time, originally Paramount was to produce the film and both Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks were in talks to star in the film. Production had lagged considerably from 2010 to 2015. Director Kathryn Bigelow left the project to focus on Bowe Bergdahl and J.C Chandor was her replacement. Over the next couple of years, different actors had been but forward to star in the film and the title had changed to Sleeping Dogs.

It wasn’t until May of 2017 that it was reported that Netflix was negotiating to acquire the rights from Paramount. Ben and Casey Affleck were reported as the actors in contention to take the lead roles. Affleck left the role for personal reasons but would later return to take the role he had vacated. The title would later be retitled again to Triple Frontier.

The following actors over the course of 8 years had been cast or were in talks to star:

  • Johnny Depp – After waiting 6 years Depp no longer wanted the role.
  • Tom Hanks – After waiting for 7 years Hanks no longer wanted the role.
  • Will Smith – Was committed to starring in Collateral Beauty and left the cast.
  • Channing Tatum – When Paramount dropped the film Tatum left the cast.
  • Tom Hardy – When Paramount dropped the film Hardy left the cast.
  • Mahershala Ali – Was forced to drop out due to delay in production
  • Mark Wahlberg- Was replaced by the returning Ben Affleck

Triple Frontier went through a lot of changes and could have looked entirely different.
