First announced late last year, Netflix has officially scooped up the worldwide rights to Bad Bridgets, an upcoming 19th-century period drama from Kneecap director Rich Peppiatt and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment.

Here at What’s on Netflix, we actually caught wind of this acquisition earlier this year. We reached out to Netflix back in January about the pickup, but they declined to comment at the time. We agreed to keep it under our hats and wait until they were ready for a full announcement—and now, the cat is officially out of the bag via Variety.

Initially announced during the AFM market in October 2025, the film will be written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, who recently made massive waves with the critically acclaimed Irish comedy Kneecap.

Bad Bridgets boasts an incredibly strong lineup of producers. Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara are producing for LuckyChap Entertainment (Barbie, Saltburn), alongside Trevor Birney, Patrick O’Neill, and Carol Murphy for Fine Point Films (Kneecap). Milan Popelka is also producing. The project is a co-production between Fine Point Films, Coup d’Etat Films, FilmNation Entertainment, and LuckyChap.

Here’s everything else we know so far about Bad Bridgets on Netflix:

What is the plot of Bad Bridgets?

The film is inspired by the fascinating historical book Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem, and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women by Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick. The script was developed with the support of Queen’s University, Belfast.

Here is the official logline for the upcoming feature:

“Set in the 19th century against the backdrop of a famine-ravaged Ireland, the story focuses on two sisters who make a treacherous journey to America to escape an abusive father, poverty, and hunger. Once in New York, they join the ranks of Irish so-called “Bridgets” creating mayhem in the city.”

Who is in the cast of Bad Bridgets?

Emilia Jones (CODALocke & Key) will lead the film. When the film was originally announced late last year, Daisy Edgar-Jones (TwistersNormal People) was attached to co-star in this role.

Stepping into the co-lead role is Alison Oliver, best known for her standout performances in Saltburn and Conversations with Friends. She will play the sister to Jones’ character as they make their harrowing journey from Ireland to New York.

Who else is behind the project?

Behind the camera, Peppiatt has assembled an award-winning crew to bring 19th-century New York and Ireland to life.

Oscar-winning production designer James Price (Poor Things) is on board to handle the sets, while Kate Hawley (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Netflix’s Frankenstein) will serve as costume designer. Ryan Kernaghan (Kneecap) will serve as the Director of Photography.

Also attached to the production are Line Producer Alex Boyd and Production Coordinator Kelly McRedmond.

What is the production status of Bad Bridgets?

Pre-production is currently in its final stages. Filming is officially scheduled to get underway on June 29, 2026.

Cameras will be rolling in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and across the Republic of Ireland.

Given the summer 2026 production schedule, we’d expect Bad Bridgets to land on Netflix sometime in mid-to-late 2027.
