Despite the consistent presence of licensed South Indian films in the weekly Top 10 Non-English Movies lists, Netflix had been slow to produce Original content in South Indian languages. That changed at the Next on Netflix 2025 event, held on February 3 of that year. The event featured the announcement of the Tamil Original sports film Test — which premiered April 4, 2025 — and the Telugu Original series Super Subbu, releasing July 2, 2026. The Next on Netflix event featured a first look at the new comedy series about a reluctant sex education teacher.

Later in 2025, Netflix expanded on its commitment to South Indian Originals, announcing a slate of movies and shows in Tamil and Telugu planned for release in 2026. Super Subbu was again featured among them.

Super Subbu is created and directed by Tillu Square director Mallik Ram, who clarified his approach to storytelling: “With Super Subbu, we wanted to tell a story that is fun and full of heart while also making conversations around topics like sex education feel less taboo. Humour became the best way to do that because laughter instantly breaks the discomfort.” Ram co-wrote the series with Ramesh Eligeti (Balagam) and Shivani Dhobal. The show is produced by Rajiv Chilaka and Bharath Laxmipati, with Chilaka Productions.

What is the plot of Super Subbu?

Here’s how Netflix describes the funny new Telugu series:

In this comedy of errors, Subramanyam “Subbu” Chillukuri Rao is posted to the one place no teacher wants to go: the notorious (and entirely fictitious) village of Maakipur. Determined to save face with his family, Subbu arrives ready to teach – only to be handed the village’s most awkward assignment: teaching sex education! In his classroom, every question becomes a debate, every rumour travels at the speed of light, and nothing stays under wraps for too long. Armed with little to no experience but plenty of good intentions, Subbu has to navigate a whirlwind of misunderstandings and unlikely friendships as he attempts to teach the villagers that even “no beans no” is a full sentence. In the process, he discovers that while he’s trying to change Maakipur, the village may just end up changing him too.

Who is cast in Super Subbu?

The titular Subbu is played by Sundeep Kishan (Captain Miller), who says of his character: “Subbu is someone who starts out trying to solve one problem and somehow ends up with five more.”

Mithila Palkar co-stars as Subbu’s unlikely ally. Super Subbu is Palkar’s fourth Netflix India Original, following the English-language series Little Things and the Hindi movies Chopsticks and Tribhanga: Tedhi Medhi Crazy.

Veteran actor Murli Sharma (Tillu Square) makes his streaming debut as Subbu’s strict, prudish father Kukkuteshwar. Regarding this career milestone, Sharma told Bollywood Hungama: “being my first OTT ever, I am super excited. I had a great time doing it.”

Other key cast members include:

  • Get Up Srinu (Bhola Shankar)
  • Maanasa Choudhary (Aaryan)
  • Jeevan (Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1)
  • Brahmanandam (Bro)

Super Subbu has seven episodes and a TV-14 rating in the United States for sex, substances, and language. Subtitles are available in 36 languages, with dubbed dialogue options in English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin America), Tamil, Telugu (audio description), and Turkish.
