Based on the beloved Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender is undoubtedly one of Netflix’s most anticipated fantasy shows of 2024. Set in a world of four nations — Water, Earth, Fire and Air — individuals from each nation have the power to control and manipulate (or “Bend”) respective elements. However, only the Avatar has the ability to bend all four elements.

When the oppressive Fire Nation revolts, the responsibility to restore harmony to the world falls to young Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier). With help from his friends, Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), he must master all four elements and try to restore peace to a world in chaos.

Dead Boy Detectives

Coming to Netflix: April 25th, 2024

Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix)

In 2022, Netflix premiered its adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s seminal comic book, The Sandman, and it went down brilliantly. And soon, before Sandman season 2 hits our screens, Netflix will premiere Dead Boy Detectives, set in the ‘Sandman Universe’.

Dead Boy Detectives follows the deceased duo Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) and Edwin Payne (George Rexstew). They refuse to enter the afterlife and instead remain on Earth to solve all sorts of fantastical paranormal cases.

The Dead Boy Detectives have their origin in the Sandman comics, and later spawned several standalone runs, notably written by Toby Litt and Pornsak Pichetshote.

Producer Neil Gaiman has already confirmed that there will be a Sandman crossover, and that one of the Endless will make an appearance. Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) seems like a solid guess, but we’ll have to wait and see who it is!

Devil May Cry

Coming to Netflix: 2024 TBD

With shows like Blue Eye Samurai, Netflix is really leaning into the world of adult animation. One show that’s already got a huge fanbase due to the beloved video game series is Devil May Cry, which comes to Netflix later this year. Devil May Cry follows Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, determined to avenge his mother’s death by killing all demons.

The animated series has been in development since 2018. But according to showrunner Adi Shankar, the wait will be worth it. “Rest assured, we are working very hard because we love the franchise and because we want to deliver something great,” he told Netflix. “Our goal wasn’t just to pump out another animated show. My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform — period.”

MONSTERS: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation

Coming to Netflix: January 2024

You probably know Eiichiro Oda as being the creator of the One Piece series. Sure, that’s what he’s best known for. However, his body of work expands far beyond One Piece, and Netflix is keen to shine the spotlight on his other projects, beginning with MONSTERS: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation.

Premiering later this month, the animated show tells the story of Ryuma, a legendary swordsman from the Land of Wano in One Piece.

Raybearer

Based on the Jordan Ifueko novel, this young adult fantasy adaptation was first announced in September 2021 with Gina Atwater working on the project.

It’s unclear where this project is in its development cycle – Netflix continues to work with Sugar23, but we’ve heard nothing on this since the initial announcement. Given that Gina Atwater’s profile on The Mission Entertainment doesn’t even mention the project, we can probably assume it’s on the backburner at the least and canceled at worst.

The Magic Order

One of the many Millarworld adaptations coming soon to Netflix and believed to be one of the furthest along is The Magic Order. Netflix has dabbled in Millarworld projects before. You might remember Jupiter’s Legacy (2021), which was sadly cancelled after one season. Hopefully, The Magic Order will fare better.

The Magic Order is a group of five families of wizards — each family lives in society, secretly protecting the human race from supernatural threats. Think Harry Potter, with gangsters mixed in. Back when the project was announced, creator Mark Millar explained what viewers can expect:

“We live in a world where we’ve never seen a monster, and The Magic Order is the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Magic meets the mob in The Magic Order, as five families of magicians-sworn to protect our world for generations-must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day, they live among us as our neighbors, friends, and co-workers, but by night, they are the sorcerers, magicians, and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness…unless the darkness gets them first.”

At the moment, The Magic Order doesn’t have a release date. It is still very early in development; it’s endured plenty of setbacks over the years. Watch this space.

The Rats

Coming to Netflix: 2024 TBD

Netflix is developing another The Witcher spinoff, titled The Rats, which follows a group of renegade teens, introduced in the end of season 3. The series wrapped production in July 2023, and is set to premiere later this year; no specific release date has been announced yet.

The prequel spinoff had a shortened 2-month production cycle, suggesting that the initial 8-episode order has been cut short — Netflix is yet to confirm this. Some reports even suggest that the spinoff could end up being a movie.

The Rats is shrouded in mystery. With a release date estimated for later this year, Netflix hasn’t even released any stills or teasers yet. It’ll be interesting to see how this one develops. Perhaps we’ll get more clarification during one of Netflix’s TUDUM or Geeked Week events.

Twilight of the Gods

Over the years, Netflix has become a home for Zack Snyder projects. With movies like his zombie thriller Army of the Dead, and his sci-fi epic Rebel Moon — Snyder and Netflix have a good history. And the projects keep on coming. His animated series based on Norse Mythology, Twilight of the Gods, is slated to premiere this year.

Written by Snyder and Jay Oliva, the 8-episode animated series is headlined by Sylvia Hoeks’ Sigrid, who works to but together a team capable of taking down a powerful god. Speaking to Collider, Snyder gave an easy-to-understand synopsis of the series.

“There’s a king and his queen in a small Viking village, and they want to get married. An event happens to them at their wedding that causes Sigrid, who is the bride-to-be, who is the child of giants, to go on a crazy mission of revenge.”

Twilight of the Gods was originally set to premiere in 2022, but after being pushed back, it is now reportedly hitting screens sometime later this year.

Returning Fantasy Shows

Arcane (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix: November 2024

Arcane season one was a massive success story for Netflix. The animated series based on League of Legends ranked first on the Netflix Top 10 Chart in 52 countries. It also boasts an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Needless to say, fans are incredibly hyped for what season 2 has to offer.

With season 2 expected to premiere in late-2024, we’re already getting teasers for the new episodes. Check out the latest:

Alice in Borderland (Season 3)

alice in borderland season 2 netflix first look 3

Kento Yamazaki as Arisu in Alice in Borderland Season 2

Coming to Netflix: TBD

Based on the beloved manga series by Haro Aso, Alice in Borderland is a survival series, not unlike Battle Royale and Squid Game. It’s brutal, tense, gruesome and irreverent. Similar to Squid Game, the contestants are forced to take part in increasingly sadistic games. Given the huge cliffhanger in the season 2 finale, a third season seemed inevitable.

Thanks to the success of season 2, Alice in Borderland has become Netflix’s most popular series ever in Japan. We can tell you that the games will continue, but perhaps not anytime soon. Netflix has not set a release date for season 3. Watch this space.

Blood of Zeus (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix: May 15th, 2024

Another show on Netflix’s wildly impressive animation slate is Blood of Zeus, a series set within the vast world of Greek myth. Airing in 2020, season one was a beautifully animated, captivating adventure. However, it didn’t wrap up Heron’s story. It was only just beginning, leaving us on a huge cliffhanger.

Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait long to see how things pan out. Season 2 premieres May 15th. Watch the official trailer:

Shahmaran (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix: TBD

Shahmaran recently debuted its first season on Netflix . Currently Netflix does not have a release date in place for season 2 yet, nor has it been officially green-lit. Sometimes it can take months for shows to be renewed — look no further than The Sandman — so it’s time for fans to be patient.

The Turkish fantasy series follows Şahsu (Serenay Sarikaya), who confronts her grandfather, seeking a reason as to why he abandoned her mother… only to be swept into something much deeper than a simple explanation.

Sweet Home (Season 3)

Coming to Netflix: 2024 TBD

Fans of Netflix’s brutal K-drama Sweet Home won’t be made to wait another three-years for a new season. The third and final season is on the way, and it’s set to hit screens sometime in 2024.

Before Squid Game ruled Netflix’s Korean (and worldwide) catalogue, it was Sweet Home that held the crown. The South Korean series became the first Korean show to enter the top 10 in the United States. Season 2 continued the trend when it premiered in December 2023, and Netflix is wasting no time in pushing season 3 into production.

In the ending of season 2, Netflix confirmed that the third and final season will premiere “Summer 2024.” This is a super fast turnaround, considering the mammoth 3-year wait between seasons 1 and 2.

One Piece (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix: TBD – likely 2025.

one piece first week launch netflix viewership

Given the immense popularity of the anime, Netflix’s One Piece had an enormous fanbase ready to watch the live-action adaptation. There was apprehension, given how beloved the property is, but the remake managed to please long-time fans whilst also attracting to new viewers.

Season 1 was merely the beginning of the journey; one that Netflix is fully invested in expanding. Luffy’s quest for the coveted “One Piece” has gotten off to a fantastic start. Long may it continue!

Netflix announced season 2 in a comical video from creator Eiichiro Oda:

The Sandman (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix: TBD – likely 2025.

The Sandman (Netflix)

The Sandman was one of Netflix’s biggest original show of 2022. Like every other show, progress on season 2 was put on pause in 2023 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes throughout the entertainment industry. But now, the new season is well back into filming.

The Sandman season 2 will continue the adventures of Dream (Tom Sturridge), as he returns to Hell and confronts Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) once more. It will cover more volumes of the comic, including Season of Mists and Brief Lives, and also adapt numerous standalone issues, such as The Song of Orpheus.
